Makikipaglaban na naman si Inang Sierra Madre sa isang supertyphoon. Sierra Madre literally means Mother Mountain. She’s a 500-kilometer storm wall that stretches from Cagayan up north to Quezon Province down south.

Her presence alone disrupts the wind patterns of typhoons the moment it meets the mountain range. In 2022, Typhoon Karding rapidly lost strength after slamming into the Sierra Madre, sparing Metro Manila from catastrophic damage.

Today, she’s a formidable defender. But her future is bleak. Because at the rate she is being quarried and deforested, she will one day lose to a monster storm, taking all of us with her as sorrow and destruction are unleashed by a future supertyphoon.

Maybe if we start thinking of Sierra Madre as a fragile mountain goddess, relying on the care and protection of her mortal children to stay powerful, we would be that much more concerned and watchful over her.

But until we treat Sierra Madre as a living and breathing stormbreaker, she will one day give up the ghost and leave us to our own defenses.

The Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Spanning over 540 kilometers (340mi) it runs from the province of Cagayan down to the province of Quezon, forming north - south direction on the eastern portion of Luzon, the largest island of the archipelago. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, Cagayan Valley to the northwest, Central Luzon to the midwest and CaLaBaRZon to the southwest. Some communities east of the mountain range,along the coast, are less developed and so remote that they could only be accessed by taking plane or boat.
