Got to talk about my favorite-est subspecialty in Dermatology at a postgraduate course last Friday 👩🏻‍⚕️ Milestone para sa neophyte dermatologic surgeon na ‘to, so siyempre may reflection ako 😋

In Derm Surg, our work lies in the intersection between form and function. And refining our surgical technique matters because:

❕Patient expectations are rising
❕Even the smallest excision can affect a patient’s confidence, especially in visible areas like the face, and
❕Surgical technique has a direct impact on patient outcomes, and this can make or break our reputation

I wrapped up my lecture with three reminders I also live by each day. There are times when I’m still unsatisfied with my work, but every setback is a lesson. Part of growing as a surgeon is asking yourself ‘What would I do differently next time?’ —and just keep refining your craft. 🧐😇

Somewhere in Tumblr-verse, I once read: “Scars are tattoos with better stories.” Certainly, scars aren’t something to be ashamed of. I have a few fresh ones myself, and for now, I don’t feel the need to erase them.

But for many, scars can be more than just marks on the skin. They can affect self-esteem and quality of life in ways that aren’t always visible. The good news? Advances in skincare have made it possible to soften, fade, and improve the appearance of scars.

Lasers are a game-changer when it comes to improving the look of scars. From acne marks to surgical scars, laser treatments can:

🔹 Reduce redness
🔹 Smooth texture
🔹 Boost collagen for healthier skin

Results can be subtle or dramatic — depending on the type of scar and laser used — but they almost always mean progress.

Healing is personal. Whether you choose to keep your scars or seek treatment, the choice is always yours — and valid. 💫

Attended a series of learning activities the past 3 days: the PGH postgraduate course on day 1, facial anatomy review with our “silent mentors” on day 2, and hands-on demo of different fillers, lasers, threads, and other medical devices on day 3.

Key insights I gained:
✨respect the facial anatomy (if you don’t want unnatural looking results)
✨embrace individuality (treatment is not de-kahon/one size fits all)
✨you don’t have to follow treatment trends, only do what resonates with you

As someone deeply involved in procedural dermatology, I found it to be a great refresher.
And I really enjoyed having the chance to try and experiment (a.k.a. Naglaro 🤭) with the medical devices the companies provided.

I’m grateful to have been given this opportunity to learn 💕

Can you SPOT the difference? 👀

A 65-year old patient came to my clinic five months ago, concerned about two dark spots on her face that were gradually enlarging. After excision, the biopsy revealed that the lesions were benign (hindi cancer 🙏🏽). The patient lives abroad and recently returned home, at nagulat ako sa improvement 😳 I was genuinely surprised by how well the wounds have healed. Nung tinanggal ko kasi yung mga tahi one week after the surgery, may redness and mild skin irregularities pa. While I understand that wounds take years to fully heal, the progress in such a short period was remarkable.

FYI, this is the typical healing process:
1️⃣ Hemostasis
2️⃣ Inflammatory Phase
3️⃣ Proliferative Phase
4️⃣ Remodeling Phase

In general, visible healing is relatively quick, but complete tissue regeneration and scar remodeling can take anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. Kahit sarado na yung surgical wound, continuous pa rin ang pag-aayos ng katawan natin dun. Scar tissue may continue to evolve and improve in appearance for up to 2 years, or longer.

Your healing journey can be influenced by factors like ✨age, ✨nutrition, ✨overall health, and ✨how well you care for the wound, so it's important to keep those in mind as you recover.

To my patients and followers,

Hello! 😊

Many of you have been reaching out over the past few months, and I wanted to take a moment to address some of your frequently asked questions.

For now, my online consultations are on hold as I’ve been busy with some exciting collaborations and applications. But the good news is, this means I’ll soon have more clinic locations available! I’m aiming for additional locations by January or February 2025 (fingers crossed 🤞🏽). I’ll be sure to update you all as soon as everything is finalized.

Our community may be small, but it’s growing stronger every day. I’m so grateful for your support and can't wait to connect with you in person.

See you soon! 🤎

The 47th PDS Annual Convention happened this week, and so there was a nationwide week-long shortage of dermatologists because almost everybody was here 😂

Ansaya kasi it was somewhat a mini reunion with friends. Our mentor from Thailand came to the Philippines as a guest speaker as well, allowing the Siriraj dermatologic surgery graduates from different batches to meet each other over dinner.

ANYWAY! I re-started clinic this morning, and will be back to my regular clinic schedules in Taguig and Makati. Fingers crossed, I’ll be having more clinic days in the south area (Parañaque) before the year ends 🤞🏽✨

Fellowship ends, officially 👩🏻‍🎓 and what a year!

Before entering this training program, I didn’t have big dreams nor grand ambitions. I came here as an obscure dermatologist, simply wanting to improve my surgical skills, do aesthetic procedures, and learn the principles behind lasers and EBDs. But after a year of being surrounded with amazing mentors, I’ve truly been inspired to dream big and aim higher.

Thank you to all our ajarns. First, for accepting me into the program and giving me an opportunity to grow. And also, for the validation and critiques whenever we’re doing something right or wrong, respectively. Khop khun ka Ajarns Aod, Penn, Pear, Mi, Pink, Jan, Meme, Yanin, Nat, Rosalyn, Orn. 🙏🏽🤍

A shoutout to my family, for believing in me and trusting my decisions. I’m lucky to have your support always, in ALL ways. Thank you Daddy, Mommy, bros, extended family, and Topher (a.k.a. The LOML, who came to visit 10 times throughout fellowship!). 🤍

And of course, thankful for the people I’ve been with almost everyday for the past year, my batchmates! You guys know how I feel about each of you, will never forget our memories together. 🤍

I learned so much more than I expected, and met so many interesting people and lifelong friends. Now, it’s time to write the next chapter as a dermatologic surgeon, back home 🇵🇭

Feeling ecstatic tonight, thanks to our workshop this afternoon 👄

Grateful for our junior Ajarns (Aj. Orn, Aj. Jan, Aj. Meme, Aj. Yanin, Aj. Rosalyn, Aj. Fah) who kept an eye on us today, and patiently guide us on a regular basis.

I’m not the best in remembering data and factual information, but I do remember (almost) every practical tip and tricks that you share in passing. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Spent the weekend learning more about aesthetic procedures (but mostly threads) in the 7th Aesthetic Pioneer Experts Meeting (APEM). Quite refreshing and eye-opening to see the different techniques of experts from all over the world.

Also had the wonderful opportunity to meet and assist Dr. Contessa Salvador Alapag during the hands on workshop. She’s a fellow Filipina with a warm and welcoming soul (hugged me when I introduced myself - note that it’s our first time meeting 😂) who specializes on nose augmentation and reshaping.

Despite the sacrifices and hardships that come with doing fellowship abroad, this program has boosted my confidence, skill set, and network. Quite sad that it’s about to end, but excited to go back to our clinic and catch up with my patients (and meet new ones!) 👩🏻‍⚕️
