Dr. Jeremiah Torrico is excited to share that his research with Dr. Maria Lourdes Genuino and Mr. John Eric Sulit, entitled 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗠𝗡𝗥𝗦) 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, will be presented at ASPEN 2026 in Long Beach, Florida!

This work highlights the burden of pediatric malnutrition and the importance of choosing the right screening tools to identify children who need timely nutrition intervention.

Dr. Torrico is grateful for the chance to share insights, learn from experts, and advocate for better nutrition care for children everywhere.

Dr. Jeremiah Torrico is deeply honored to be named recipient of this year’s 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐃. 𝐏𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬, conferred by the Department of Pediatrics, Philippine General Hospital.

𝑵𝒐 𝒈𝒖𝒕𝒔, 𝒏𝒐 𝒈𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒚.

In pediatric gastroenterology, that means showing up every day with perseverance, courage, and heart—through long hours, difficult cases, and moments that test both skill and spirit. Sometimes, the quiet rewards come as gentle reminders that the journey gives back far more than we ever expect.

Dr. Torrico entered the Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition fellowship with a clear goal: to specialize more deeply in pediatric nutrition. What he gained, however, went far beyond that initial intention: a broader perspective, deeper purpose, and a profound appreciation for caring for children with complex needs.

With sincere gratitude, he thanks the PGH Department of Pediatrics for this recognition and the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition for the opportunity to learn, serve, and aspire. More than a training ground, the division became a place where perseverance was shaped into purpose.

To his mentors, thank you for the guidance, patience, and unwavering support. Beyond clinical excellence, you nurtured values, compassion, and integrity. Your mentorship helped shape not just a physician, but a better advocate for children and families.

Above all, his deepest thanks go to the Filipino children and families who remain his greatest teachers. Each child has taught resilience, humility, and hope. This honor is for them and for the promise to continue doing what is best for every child, always.

With gratitude in his heart (and yes, the guts and the liver), Dr. Torrico moves forward—guided by service, strengthened by perseverance, and inspired by purpose.

Every December, many Filipino families ask:
“Kaya ba ang Noche Buena sa ₱500?”

It’s a practical question, but it opens the door to a deeper conversation about food security, nutrition, and the meaning of Noche Buena in Filipino culture.

𝑵𝒐𝒄𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒂 𝒊𝒔 𝙢𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒂 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒍. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒂 𝙘𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝙘𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.
Noche Buena represents tradition, family connection, and emotional nourishment. It’s more than food on the table. It’s a shared experience that symbolizes gratitude and hope.
Whether simple or abundant, Noche Buena holds a special place in Filipino hearts because it brings families together and that alone carries nutritional value in the form of emotional well-being.

𝑪𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒆 𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒐.
Noche Buena teaches children about culture, food, gratitude, and togetherness:
-Promotes healthy eating habits,
-Provides meaningful family bonding,
-Reinforces positive associations with food, tradition, and gratitude.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒐 𝒘𝒆 𝙚𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒂𝒔𝒌 𝒊𝒇 ₱500 𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉?
Instead of saying ₱500 is “enough,” we should acknowledge that:
-Many families struggle to afford a holiday meal.
-Some can stretch a budget creatively, but
-No one should be forced to shrink their celebration because of systemic barriers.
The issue is bigger than budgeting. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒎𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒈𝒆: 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒔, 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒃𝒖𝒅𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒔.
Yes, some families can prepare a simple, nutritious Noche Buena with ₱500. But instead of telling people to simply “adjust” or “spend less,” we should recognize the deeper issue: many Filipinos struggle with food security not because of poor budgeting, but because of structural and systemic barriers.

If we want families to celebrate Noche Buena with dignity and nourishment, we should focus on:
-Strengthening nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive policies
-Addressing corruption and inefficiencies in food systems
-Supporting programs that ensure affordable, accessible, nutritious food
-Building an environment where families can thrive, not just survive

This holiday season, may we honor the spirit of Noche Buena by celebrating with gratitude and by advocating for a country where every family has both the food and the means to enjoy traditions fully.

Yet today, many of our children continue to face significant challenges.

Equally concerning are 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 in clinical practice and public health programs. These are concerning as undernutrition in the early years can limit a child’s potential long before adulthood begins.

Despite progress in recent decades, child malnutrition in the Philippines remains among the highest in the region, with slow improvements compared to neighboring countries.

This underscores the need for stronger programs that ensure children have access to adequate nutrition, safe environments, healthcare, and opportunities to thrive.

As we celebrate 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, may we strengthen our resolve to:
