🤯And this isn't even the extensive list.

There are lots of reasons why a child might be referred to OT, and it's really helpful for caregivers + parents to know all the things that we can address.

Therapists - have you ever completed an eval and the parent had never heard of OT or what we can support?

There's no shame in it, but It happens frequently.

🗣One of the first questions I like to ask the parent during their evaluation is "Are you familiar with what OT addresses?" You can even talk about how OT, Speech, and PT are different.

It gives the parent the opportunity to better express their concerns related to OT skills and gives the therapist the time to advocate for their profession.

Co-regulation occurs before a child can regulate themselves.

It's when they need the support of an adult to help them match their state of regulation to their environment. The adult can calm them when needed, or help the be more alert and engaged.

And honestly, this idea that 6 year olds can fully regulate their own emotions is silly. Sometimes adults needs co-regulation support from a parent, partner, or animal. Hello, support animals.

Early Intervention is a game changer - but we are STILL fighting the stigma that comes with intervention and possible diagnoses.

If we notice our kids are developing on a different timeframe than most kids - we should jump in and support them before the gap is HUGE. Waiting 18 months for intervention (when it’s optional, I realize many people are on waiting lists and seeing posts like these can be frustrating) is often NOT in kids’ best interest.

Kids shouldn’t have to struggle for months and months before they get help- whenever possible, it’s best to see a professional and get an evaluation to know if your child needs the support.

For those waiting due to waitlists or low availability of services in your area- I got you. I share all kinds of tips here to help YOU support your child, and also can recommend some online courses if you need suggestions!

PS: this is based on analytic language milestones - it’s common for gestalt language learners to develop skills differently, and so the numbers here may not be quite as relevant (often GLPs are great at repeating or have lots of words in longer scripts) - so keep this in mind ❤️

Reposting some of your favorites from the year...This is one of mine too.

A child's job is to play.

An OTs job is to figure out how to turn that exact play into a therapeutic activity.

I'll be honest this isn't easy in the beginning of your career. You want to plan out every activity before the session starts so that you can ensure you are working on the goals.

But what happens when the child doesn't want to do what you planned? Stress and doubt creep in.

Instead. think about how you can engage in their preferred play while still working on their goals.

Can we add manipulatives?
Can we model a different play schemes?
Can we incorporate beneficial sensory stimuli?
Can we turn it into a multi-step activity?
