Amblyopia or lazy eye is reduced vision in one eye caused by abnormal visual development early in life.

WHAT IS AMBLYOPIA?

Amblyopia or lazy eye is reduced vision in one eye caused by abnormal visual development early in life. The weaker (or "lazy") eye often wanders inward or outward. Amblyopia generally develops from birth up to age 7 years. It is the leading cause of decreased vision among children. Rarely, lazy eye affects both eyes. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent long-term vision problems in children with amblyopia. The eye with poorer vision can usually be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, or patching therapy.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on amblyopia.

WHAT’S THE ‘SAFE’ SCREEN TIME FOR MY CHILD?

"Safe" amounts of screen time for children vary by age. The World Health Organization' suggest no screen time at all for children before age 1, and very limited screen time for children for several years after that.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend no digital media use (except video-chatting) in children younger than 18 to 24 months; when children do start using screens, parents should focus on educational media. Total media time for children 2 and older should be limited to not more than 30 minutes weekly.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how to manage your children’s screen time.

RISKS OF EXCESSIVE SCREEN TIME FOR CHILDREN

Parents should be aware of the possible effects of screen use on children’s overall health and development, including on their eyes. Amount of screen use per day has been associated with developmental outcomes, obesity, poor sleep quality and eye development.

A 2022 study found that excessive screen time can impair emotional comprehension, promote aggressive behavior, and hinder social and emotional competence in children. Research from Canada found that preschoolers who had more than two hours of screen time per day had a nearly-8-fold increase in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how to manage your children’s screen time.

IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR EYE EXAMS 🩺👁️

Regular eye exams are an important part of finding eye diseases early to protect your vision. When eye diseases are diagnosed in their early stages, treatment to prevent vision loss is most effective.

These include amblyopia (lazy eye, which is common in children), refractive errors (astigmatism, hyperopia, myopia, presbyopia), cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Children's eyes should be checked regularly by an eye doctor or pediatrician. Experts recommend that children have at least one eye exam between age 3 and 5 years. If your eyes are healthy and vision is good, you should have a complete exam by your ophthalmologist once in your 20s and twice in your 30s.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults get a complete eye examination at age 40. This is when early signs of disease or changes in vision may appear.

Some adults shouldn't wait until they are 40 to have a complete eye exam. See an ophthalmologist now if you have an eye disease or risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and family history of eye disease.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information.
