The Department of Health (DOH), represented by Assistant Secretary Ariel I. Valencia, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new four-storey Cardiac Center of the Batangas Medical Center (BatMC) in Batangas City last May 13, 2024.
The event was graced by several officials, including Batangas Province Vice Governor Hon. Jose Antonio "Mark" Leviste II, Batangas City Councilor Hon. Andrea Faytaren Macaraig, BatMC Medical Center Chief II Dr. Ramoncito C. Magnaye, Philippine Heart Center (PHC) Executive Director Dr. Joel M. Abanilla, and the members of the BatMC Executive and Medical Management Committees.
The ceremony coincided with the Philippine Heart Center's 2nd Cardiovascular Mission at BatMC, during which thirteen (13) patients received life-saving heart procedures without any mortalities. This collaboration showcased the effective partnership between BatMC and the PHC.
The 3,053.32-square-meter facility will house the Cardiac Center, Lung Care Center, and Renal Care and Transplant Center. Expected to be completed by late 2025, it will add 46 beds to BatMC, significantly enhancing its capacity to serve patients in Region IV-A and nearby provinces. This initiative aligns with the first point of the 8-Point Action Agenda, "Bawat Pilipino, ramdam ang kalusugan," which aims to enhance and develop health facilities and systems and ensure access to inclusive, comprehensive, and affordable healthcare services for all Filipinos dahil sa Bagong Pilipinas, Bawat Buhay Mahalaga.

The Department of Health (DOH) spearheaded the Regular Meeting of the Philippine Country Coordinating Mechanism (PCCM) held in the Citystate Tower Hotel in Ermita, Manila, today, 15 May 2024. The meeting opens an avenue to discuss critical health initiatives and policies to combat major public health concerns in the country.
Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa, along with Dr. Aleli Annie Grace P. Sudiacal of the DOH Bureau of International Health Cooperation (BIHC) and the Executive Secretary of the PCCM Secretariat, highlighted the significance of streamlined coordination among various health organizations and stakeholders to enhance public health outcomes.
Topics discussed during the meeting included the endorsement of the PCCM Oversight Committee Report, the Key Population Committee Report, and the roadmap to tax exemption of Global Fund grants, aiming to resolve tax refund concerns efficiently.
Among those present were representatives from Samahang Lusog Baga, Kapwersa sa Malaria, Positive Action Foundation Philippines, (BRAC), Aids Healthcare Foundation, Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), World Health Organization (WHO), TB People Philippines Organization, Inc., Council for the Welfare of Children, and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).
"The DOH is committed to fostering collaboration among various health organizations to ensure that every Filipino has access to essential health services. Through our collective efforts, we aim to address and overcome the health challenges faced by our nation towards a Bagong Pilipinas kung saan Bawat Buhay Mahalaga," expressed Secretary Herbosa.

IN PHOTOS: DOH, WORLD BANK TACKLE AREAS OF COLLABORATION TO STRENGTHEN PRIMARY CARE IMPLEMENTATION IN THE COUNTRY, PLEDGE TO WORK TOGETHER TO BRING PRIMARY CARE SERVICES CLOSER TO VULNERABLE POPULATION IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Department of Health (DOH) Officer-in-Charge Secretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire, together with Undersecretary for Health Systems Development Team (HSDT) Dr. Lilibeth C. David, today met with World Bank Country Director for the Philippines Dr. Ndiame Diop and Health and Human Capital Development Dr. Ronald Mutasa, to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at further bolstering primary health care in the country, especially the vulnerable population in far flung areas.
Both Dr. Diop and Dr. Mutasa committed to aid the DOH in expanding the country’s primary health care and health care provider network capacities through developing infrastructure, information technology, and supply chain systems, providing mobile facilities and patient transport vehicles, and instituting enablers such as policies and health financing.
“I would like to extend the Department’s sincerest gratitude to the World Bank for continuously aiding the country in its goal of providing Filipinos with eased access to healthcare services wherever they may be in the country.
These initiatives serve as proof that through collaboration, we are able to fast-track needed services for every Filipino and at the same time, continue strengthening the status of public health within the country,” said OIC Vergeire.
