Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body is unable to produce or utilize adequate levels of insulin in order to reduce blood sugar levels. When sugar levels are high in the blood, many internal processes are damaged as the body relies on a balance of all types of substances to function properly. Diabetes is a condition that is often hereditary, meaning if your parents or grandparents had it it is highly likely you will contract it later in life. It is also caused by overeating sweet or glucose-rich foods and having an imbalanced diet.
There are different types of diabetes, such as type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1, is when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin due to the loss of beta cells. Type 2, begins with an insulin resistance, a condition where cells do not respond to insulin properly. This can also lead to the bodyโs underproduction of insulin. gestational diabetes, this occurs when a pregnant woman without a history of diabetes starts to develop high blood sugar levels.
Diabetes generally leads to problems with the kidneys, high blood pressure, and damage to the nervous system and to blood vessels. In extreme cases, it could result in cardiac arrests or strokes. Fortunately, its effects can be mitigated through regular check-ups with the doctor and the injection of insulin, which would allow the body to break down excess glucose. It is also a remarkably prevalent disease, as it affects over 537 million people around the world, making up 10% of the global population.
