Proud to be part of a milestone in Philippine ophthalmology — the first robotic cataract surgery in the country, where I participated as a subinvestigator contributing to the advancement of surgical innovation. 📈

Also proud to have been trained by the best at Asian Eye Institute — continuing to carry forward their standard of excellence in every case. 💯

| A historic milestone in ophthalmology was reached as surgeons successfully completed the world’s first fully robot-assisted cataract surgery on a human patient. The procedure positions the Philippines and the Asian Eye Institute as leaders in the future of global eye care.

Interviewed by Frontline News5 to shed light on a common and seemingly alarming eye condition — Subconjunctival Hemorrhage. 🩸

A subconjunctival hemorrhage happens when a tiny blood vessel breaks beneath the conjunctiva (the clear surface of the eye), causing a bright red patch.

While it may look serious, it is usually harmless, painless, and resolves on its own within days to weeks.

Most cases don’t require treatment, but proper evaluation is still important to be sure. ✅

A hypermature cataract can lead to complete blindness if left untreated.

The lens becomes dense, opaque, and advanced enough to block light from entering the eye.

But the good news? As long as there are no other underlying problems in the eye, cataract surgery can restore vision — often dramatically.

In this case, an Extended-Depth-Of-Focus (EDOF) intraocular lens was implanted, allowing not just the return of sight, but a continuous range of vision — from distance to intermediate with reduced dependence on glasses. 💯

Together with Dr. Juan Lorenzo T. Simpao - Ophthalmologist - Pampanga, we performed the first-ever Yokohama procedure combined with phacoemulsification & intraocular lens implantation in a patient with Heavy Eye Syndrome, further complicated by phacolytic glaucoma at UST Hospital.

Phacolytic glaucoma occurs when proteins from a hypermature cataract leak into the eye, triggering inflammation and blocking the natural outflow of fluid — leading to a dangerous rise in intraocular pressure.

In cases like this, definitive treatment requires removal of the cataract itself to eliminate the source of the problem.

Given the significant ocular misalignment from Heavy Eye Syndrome, Dr. Simpao first released the restrictive extraocular muscles to help realign the eye, creating the conditions needed for safe cataract extraction.

Only then could I proceed with controlled phacoemulsification & intraocular lens implantation.

Grateful for the opportunity to work alongside colleagues who approach these challenges with precision and purpose — always in service of better outcomes for our patients.

There is a different standard when you are trained by the best.

Dr. Robert Ang’s mentorship went beyond clinical and surgical excellence — he built discipline, sharpened judgment, and set a standard that demands nothing less than mastery.

The lessons I learned under him will be carried into every operation, every patient encounter, and every decision in my private practice.

Forever grateful for the training, the trust, and the standard that will guide a lifetime. 💯

This 27-year-old patient with nearsightedness & astigmatism just underwent bilateral toric Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation.

The ICL is placed inside the eye — behind the iris & in front of the natural lens — where it remains virtually invisible in everyday conditions.

It’s only faintly appreciated when the pupil is dilated, appearing as a subtle outline against the red-orange reflex.

Beyond its discreet placement, the ICL preserves corneal structure, provides sharp and stable vision, and is reversible — combining precision, safety, and comfort in one nearly invisible solution. 💯

Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso graced the grand opening of the new Eye Institute at University of Santo Tomas Hospital — a strong testament to the growing collaboration between public leadership and private healthcare.

His presence highlights the importance of accessible, high-quality eye care and signals a shared commitment to advancing vision health for more Filipinos.

This milestone marks not just a new facility, but a clearer future for patient care, innovation, and community service. 📈

Not everyone is meant for LASIK — and that’s okay.

This patient came with 20/800 vision hoping to be glasses-free.

Unfortunately, his eye grades were too high for LASIK.

Instead of forcing a procedure that wasn’t ideal for him, we chose what was safest and best: EVO ICL implantation in both eyes.

Today, he sees 20/20.

EVO ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a soft, biocompatible lens placed inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens.

Unlike LASIK, it does not remove corneal tissue, making it an excellent option for patients with very high eye grades or thin corneas.

LASIK reshapes the cornea.
EVO ICL adds a lens — preserving corneal strength. 💯
