Bones and Joints What to eat and what to avoid?
Rheumatoid arthritis should avoid eating?
The following food groups should not be on the menu of patients with RA: (2)
1. Red meat and processed meat
Research shows that eating a lot of red meat (pork, beef, goat...) and processed meat (ham, sausage, bacon, etc.) increases RA symptoms. This is because these meats promote the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP) and homocysteine - markers of inflammation in the body.
In addition, another study also showed that eating a lot of red meat increases the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. In contrast, a diet with little or no red meat was shown to improve arthritis symptoms markedly.
3. Foods high in salt
Too much salt isn't just bad for blood pressure. If you have RA and are taking steroid medication, your symptoms tend to get worse. Rheumatoid arthritis patients should aim to consume less than 5g of salt per day.
4. Foods high in sugar
Eating a lot of sweets is not good for everyone, especially those with rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have shown that eating too many sugary foods worsens RA symptoms, as well as significantly increases the risk of arthritis. Specifically, in a study of 1,209 adults ages 20–30, those who drank fructose-sweetened beverages five times a week were three times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those who drank little or no alcohol. drink fructose-sweetened beverages.
Sugar is found in candies, soft drinks, ice cream, tea, cakes, etc., and many other foods, including "innocent" items such as barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, etc.
2. Dairy products
We are often advised to drink (or eat) dairy products (such as fresh milk, yogurt, cheese…) to ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D supply for the body. However, dairy also contributes to increased inflammation in people with RA. That's because they contain saturated fat, which causes inflammation.
If you still want to keep dairy in your menu, choose low-fat dairy products over whole cream.
5. Foods containing gluten
Gluten is a group of proteins found in many grains such as barley, wheat, rye, and triticale. Some studies show that a gluten-free or low-gluten diet helps reduce inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis.
To limit gluten intolerance, people with RA need to consider before eating bread, cookies, pizza, soft drinks, sweeteners ...
6. Overly processed foods
Highly processed foods like fast food, breakfast cereals, and baked goods are often high in refined grains, added sugars, preservatives, and other potentially inflammatory ingredients. All of which aggravate arthritis symptoms.
Research shows that a common Western diet (rich in processed foods) is responsible for an increased risk of RA due to increased inflammation and risk factors such as overweight and obesity.
Not only that, in a survey of 56 people with RA, those who ate a lot of highly processed foods had an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, due to the presence of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in the blood - a marker of blood sugar. long-term blood sugar control.
7. Wine
Because alcohol can worsen arthritis symptoms, anyone with RA should limit or avoid alcohol. Chronic alcoholism is also associated with an increased risk of osteoarthritis.
In addition, when you are taking RA medication and drink alcohol, it will harm the organs in the body. For example, drinking alcohol while taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen can cause stomach bleeding, stomach ulcers; Drinking alcohol while taking acetaminophen, leflunomide (Arava) or methotrexate damages the liver…
8. Animal organs
The heart, liver, and stomach of animals contain a lot of phosphorus, and eating a lot will make people feel pain in the joints. Not only that, they also suffer from swelling in their knees and ankles, and difficulty walking because of prolonged pain.
9. Sustainable Glycation Products
Advanced glycation (AGEs) will produce end products which are molecules produced through the reaction between glucose (sugar) and proteins (proteins) or lipids (fats). They exist naturally in uncooked animal foods, and are formed through a number of cooking methods such as frying, roasting, baking, and marinating. AGEs accumulate in foods such as grilled meats, bacon, pan-fried steak, fried chicken, grilled sausages… French fries, cheese, margarine and mayonnaise are also rich in AGEs.
When AGEs accumulate in high levels in the body, oxidative stress and inflammation can occur. These two symptoms are associated with the progression of arthritis. In fact, people with arthritis have been shown to have higher levels of AGEs in their bodies than people without arthritis.
Replace these foods with nutrient-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, and fish. Doing this will help reduce the total amount of AGEs in your body.
10. Spicy seasoning
Spicy spices such as chili, pepper, mustard ... are the "culprits" that cause a burning sensation in the joints, making the tissues more swollen. That is why they are not recommended in the diet of people with rheumatoid arthritis.
