Most babies nurse to sleep and wake 1-3 times during the night especially newborn babies. Breastfeeding is obviously designed to comfort and help a baby to sleep. It calms and can even help your baby handle stress better. Sucking releases hormones in both mother and baby, which results in a sleepy feeling.
Breastfeeding mothers are told to take the baby off the breast, because it seems useless or no good. But is this true? What does a baby do when she uses us as a pacifier/dummy?
Babies under three months old does when breastfeeding (after three months of age this will change a bit and feeding patterns are different)
1.Baby starts to feed with quick suction movements. This type of suction triggers the milk ejection reflex
2.As baby feeds, mothers experience a tickling feeling. The baby changes suction pattern and her motion becomes more rhythmic and deeper.
3.This suction rhythm lasts about 3-5 minutes. At this stage, the baby is relaxed and seems to fall asleep while feeding. This is when the second part of feeding pattern begins
4.Non-nutritional suction occurs, small amounts of milk are still accumulated. When baby is full, they will swallow it
It is perfectly normal for babies to feed on the same breast until they feel satisfied and come off the breast on their own
Both phases of breastfeeding is important in making your baby feed with your milk and to feel safe and calm.
When to Unlatch Baby
Should you un-latch baby at this point? The answers can vary. If you are comfortable, your ni**le and breasts are comfortable and you don't feel like you need to take this precious time to catch up on sleep, you can hold your baby and allow them to continue to comfort suck until you are ready to unlatch. This will comfort baby and will flood your body with valuable breast-feeding hormones. However, if you have sore or tender ni**les or experience blanching and pain you will want to unlatch your baby. Your baby may confuse you when you try to unlatch because they may begin to suck again, this is simply a reflex and not typically a sign that baby is still hungry. Typically, once a baby is passively sucking, you will be able to lay baby down in crib. You can use that valuable “me” time to get much-needed sleep or that overdue shower that you have been missing.
