📝Top 100 Most Cited Articles on Awake Glioma Surgery: A Bibliometric Analysis
👥: Mary Angeline Luz U. Hernandez, MD, Almira Doreen Abigail O. Apor, MD, Kevin Ivan P. Chan, MD, Kathleen Joy O. Khu, MD

This study analyzed the 100 most cited articles on awake craniotomy for glioma surgery. Out of 5,557 articles, the most cited focused on language mapping and functional outcomes. Most publications were authored by neurosurgeons and came from the USA, France, and Italy, with journals like Journal of Neurosurgery leading in numbers. The articles covered brain mapping, surgical techniques, and practice recommendations. This analysis highlights key studies, identifies knowledge gaps, and suggests areas for future research in awake glioma surgery.

📝Clinical Profile and Drugs of Abuse Identified among People who Use Drugs Admitted to a Tertiary Hospital in the Philippines using a Validated LC-QTOF/MS Method

This study described drug use among patients referred to the UP-PGH National Poison Management and Control Center. Among 384 participants, mostly young to mid-adult males, methamphetamine was the most commonly detected substance, along with other amphetamines and new psychoactive drugs. Many patients presented with behavioral or cardiovascular symptoms. The findings highlight the prevalence of methamphetamine use in this population and demonstrate that advanced testing can identify emerging psychoactive substances, supporting better clinical management and public health interventions.

📝Clinical Characteristics, Treatment, and Outcomes in Children with Benign Convulsions with Mild Gastroenteritis in the Philippine General Hospital: A Retrospective Cohort Study
👥: Karina Terese DJ. Santos, MD, Patricia C. Orduña, MD, Rhea Angela M. Salonga-Quimpo, MD

This study reviewed benign convulsions with mild gastroenteritis (CwG) in Filipino children. Among 20 patients aged 7-60 months, seizures were brief, often clustered, and generalized, with relatively normal laboratory, EEG, and imaging results. Anti-seizure medications were prescribed in 65% of cases, though additional therapy was rarely required. Follow-up demonstrated normal development. The findings confirm that CwG in Filipino children follows a benign, self-limiting course, supporting conservative management and emphasizing caregiver counseling over extensive testing or unnecessary treatment.

📝The Diagnostic Utility of Cerebrospinal Fluid Procalcitonin for Acute Bacterial Meningitis and Ventriculitis in Children: A Multicenter Prospective Study
👥: Karina Terese DJ. Santos, MD, Elbert John V. Layug, MD, Loudella V. Calotes-Castillo, MD, Zyrelle Avienn A. Santos-Nocom, MD, Maela P. Palisoc, MD, Marilyn A. Tan, MD

This study evaluated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) procalcitonin (PCT) as a diagnostic tool for bacterial meningitis and ventriculitis in children. Among 131 patients, CF PCT effectively
distinguished bacterial infections from other central nervous system (CNS) conditions, with a cut-off of 0.19 g/mL, showing 90% sensitivity and 92% specificity. These results indicate that
CF PCT is a reliable marker, supporting accurate diagnosis and guiding appropriate antibiotic therapy in pediatric CNS infections.

📝Outcomes of Microvascular Decompression for Hemifacial
Spasm at the Philippine General Hospital
👥: Gerardo D. Legaspi, MD, Lady Scarlette P. Sedano, MD, Juan Silvestre G. Pascual, MD

This study reviewed microvascular decompression (MVD) surgery for hemifacial spasm (HFS) at PGH. Among 34 patients, mostly women, the average age of symptom onset was 38.5 years. Surgery successfully reduced HFS in 88% of cases over about 15 months. Complications included temporary or permanent facial weakness or hearing loss, while around 9% had recurrence. The findings show that MVD is an effective treatment for HFS in Filipino patients, with outcomes comparable to international standards.

📝Traumatic Peripheral Nerve Injury in the Philippines: A Retrospective Study
👥: Kathleen Joy O. Khu, MD, Abdelsimar T. Omar Il, MD, SM, Karlo M. Pedro, MD

This study examined traumatic peripheral nerve injuries (TPNls) at a tertiary hospital in the Philippines. Most patients were young males, with injuries often resulting from occupational or domestic accidents, particularly sharp-object lacerations. The ulnar and median nerves were most commonly affected, predominantly on the right side. Nerve repair surgery was performed in 80% of cases. These findings demonstrate that appropriate surgical management of TPNI is feasible in low-resource settings and can lead to functional recovery.

While IV TPA has been available in the country for over two decades, there remains to be limited published data on its use in the local setting. This study reviewed the clinical profile and outcomes of 188 patients who underwent stroke thrombolysis in UP-PGH over the past five years. Most patients were men with a median age of 60 years old and hypertension was the leading risk factor. There was improvement in median NIHSS from 13 to 4, with a median modified Rankin scale indicating moderate disability upon discharge. The median door to needle time was 48 minutes, achieving the global recommendation for thrombolysis benchmark times.
