We, the undersigned officers of the PLM Supreme Student Council, College Student Councils, and Organizations, firmly condemn the injustice and brutality inflicted by the policemen upon our fellow Haribons, the youth, and the Filipino people. These victims were met with inhumanity despite attending the rally peacefully to amplify and represent the voices of the peopleโespecially the marginalizedโin their stand against corruption, as reported through the published articles of Ang Pamantasan and affirmed through direct communication with the victims themselves.
What was expected to be a peaceful mobilization was disrupted by isolated incidents outside the intent of the rally, but instead of containing the situation responsibly, police forces escalated it through excessive and disproportionate violence against the broader peaceful crowd. While we acknowledge that the mandate of the police is to maintain peace and order, we firmly believe that this mandate must never serve as a license to unjustly apprehend and attack those exercising their constitutional right to protest in an orderly and disciplined manner. Furthermore, the lack of responsible and comprehensive media coverage further compounds this injustice, silencing stories that urgently need to be told and leaving victims vulnerable to erasure and misinformation.
This truth is exemplified by our fellow Haribons, who sustained a deep scar on the back of their leg and swelling on the head after being struck by a policeman. They were chased and beaten despite not engaging in any act of disorder โ a brutality that echoes the wider reality faced by many protesters and communities who continue to bear the brunt of systemic violence. They were merely fleeing from the tear gasโan instinctive act of self-preservationโbut were nevertheless harmed. This incident underscores the dangers of indiscriminate use of force and highlights how innocent protesters, exercising their rights, can unjustly become victims of police violence.
We stand in solidarity with our fellow Haribons and Filipinos who have suffered from these violent acts. May their wounds serve as a painful reminder of the urgent need to uphold human dignity, accountability, and justice. At the same time, we vehemently oppose the claims and narratives propagated by certain mainstream media outlets that distort the truthโportraying the movement as an avenue of misconduct rather than a legitimate act of protest for causes that profoundly affect our nation.
Let us not lose sight of the true essence of this protest: it is a collective stand against corruption, injustice, and the many systemic issues that continue to harm the Filipino people. It is an assertion of our right and duty to hold those in power accountable and to fight for a society rooted in truth, equity, and integrity.
We call on everyone to stand firm in defending our rights, to reject all forms of police brutality, and to resist corruption in every level of governance. The youth bears a crucial responsibility: to document abuses and protests, for evidence is our strongest shield against the false accusations and distortions often wielded by the police and those in power. Moreover, the youth holds immense power as a driving force of protests and campaigns. It is the youth who have sparked revolutions, resisted injustices, and propelled movements towards inclusive and equitable social reforms. Alongside this, we remind everyone not to spread unverified or unreliable information about the chaos that unfolded during the protests, as baseless fearmongering only fuels confusion and panic rather than strengthening our collective struggle.
The fight does not end at the EDSA People Power Monument or Luneta Park; it continues in every street, every home, and every space. Democracy is neither a gift nor a privilegeโit is a right that is built and safeguarded through vigilance, courage, and sacrifice. As long as abuses persist, our struggle will endure, and together we shall carry forward the hope of a nation that honors truth, accountability, and the dignity of every person.
