The Philippine General Hospital (PGH) is a tertiary state-owned hospital administered and operated by the University of the Philippines Manila, the Universityold . It is the largest government hospital administered by the university, and is designated as the National University Hospital. It is the biggest hospital in the country with a 1,500-bed capacity. It is a mixed-use hospital, with 1,000 beds for indigent patients and 500 beds for private patients, and offers some of the lowest rates for patients and is generally known as the hospital for indigent patients. The PGH, being the largest training hospital in the country, is the old laboratory hospital of health science students enrolled in the University of the Philippines. This includes students of medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, dentistry, and speech pathology. There are 15 clinical departments— Family and Community Medicine, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Neurosciences, Pediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Psychiatry, Radiology, Pathology, Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology—all of which offer residency and fellowship training. It also offers various training for paramedical specialties such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, radiation technology, nutrition, hospital dentistry, medical technology and EMT training. On an average year, about 600,000 patients pass through the hospital's halls. Because of this, many organizations help the hospital. Some help the hospital directly, such as the PGH Medical Foundation and the Fr. Others help patients by financing the cost of medications, operations and therapies. Some of these organizations are based within the University, notably the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority of the College of Medicine, recognized by UP Manila and the City of Manila as its outstanding organizations, LIKAS and Pagsama, both multi-college organizations and the Phi Lambda delta Sorority and Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity, also of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. PGH celebrated its centennial in 2007, one hundred years since the US government passed a law establishing it. The hospital has seen the worst of tropical epidemics during its early existence and the worst of the war in the 1940s. It is one of the very few Philippine hospitals that remained open all throughout the war. At present, the hospital has a bed capacity of 1,500 and around 4,000 employees.

The UP-Philippine General Hospital (UP PGH) performed the first successful pediatric liver transplant in a government hospital to a nine-year old boy with biliary atresia.

Biliary atresia is a rare condition in infants where the bile ducts become scarred and blocked, preventing bile from draining into the intestine and leading to progressive liver damage. Standard management follows a stepwise approach: early diagnosis, timely Kasai procedure to restore bile flow, and, when liver disease progresses despite surgery, liver transplantation as the definitive life-saving option.

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Domagoso has helped in funding the said procedure, pooling funds from donations from private companies, philantropists, and personal funds. He visited the patient last November 18, where he was received by UP Manila Chancellor Dr. Michael Tee and UP-PGH Director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi.

UP Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) is proud to announce that it has inaugurated two new LINAC (linear accelerator) machines, the VitalBeam (LINAC 2) and Radixact Tomotherapy (LINAC 3), to augment the hospital's currently operating CX LINAC (LINAC 1).

With this momentous occasion, a total of three functioning LINAC machines are now available in PGH, allowing it to cater to even more Filipinos in need of radiation therapy.

LINAC 2 (VitalBeam) is a high-performance conventional LINAC platform equipped to deliver fast and efficient treatment. It features respiratory gating and motion management capabilities which ensures greater precision when targeting tumors in areas such as the lung and abdomen, where motion can affect treatment accuracy. LINAC 3 (Radixact) is a Tomotherapy platform allowing the delivery of radiation in a helical 360 degree fashion around a patient. Its continuous couch motion design supports the treatment of complex geometries and long fields such as craniospinal irradiation and total body irradiation.

These two new LINACs are equipped with the latest technology, enabling radiation therapy to be delivered with greater accuracy and precision with the use of volumetric arc radiotherapy (VMAT) technique. Both machines are also equipped with cone beam CT imaging, providing 3D images for precise verification of patient’s position and treatment area before each session.

Lastly, these machines are also equipped to deliver stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). These will allow for the treatment of complex cases in fewer days and marks PGH as the first public hospital in the country that is capable of offering these services to indigent patients.

With these new additions to PGH's armamentarium, PGH is now another step closer to removing barriers to healthcare and making the latest technologies and quality cancer care available to all Filipinos.
