On September 8, 2025, UP-PGH made history as its Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology performed the first Microwave Ablation for Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence in the Philippines.

TRAP sequence is a rare twin pregnancy complication where an underdeveloped “acardiac” twin without a heart receives blood supply from the healthy “pump” twin. Microwave ablation, a novel treatment, offers advantages, such as uniform heating, minimal thermal spread, faster procedure time, and reduced risks compared to traditional methods.

This milestone procedure was conducted under the guidance of Professor Suresh Seshadri, Director of MediScan Systems Diagnostic Ultrasound, Fetal Medicine and Training Centre in Chennai, India and board trustee of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG).
