📌 To our dear lolos and lolas!

A short duration of singing improved vascular function acutely. Improvements were more substantial in subjects with abnormal baseline endothelial function. HRV patterns were similar to that of light-intensity exercise.

Garlic supplementation reduced blood pressure by 7–16 mm Hg (systolic) and 5–9 mm Hg (diastolic) (4 meta-analyses and 2 original studies). It reduced total cholesterol by 7.4–29.8 mg/dL (8 meta-analyses). The most consistent benefits were shown in studies that used aged garlic extract (AGE). - Canadian Scientists

Nonadherence to medications remains a major problem for cardiovascular patients. It leads to poor clinical outcomes, including rehospitalization, subsequent myocardial infarction, and increased mortality in various patient settings. Clinicians need to use multiple approaches to simple solutions to improve their patients’ short- and long-term medication adherence.

Researchers from the University of Utah proved that social support is one of the most reliable predictors of better health outcomes, including lower cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. Although past research has focused on links between social support and health outcomes, much less work has explored whether social support is a mediator of the association between other psychological factors and cardiovascular disease.

From: Compare, A., Zarbo, C., Manzoni, G. M., Castelnuovo, G., Baldassari, E., Bonardi, A., Callus, E., & Romagnoni, C. (2013). Social support, depression, and heart disease: a ten year literature review. Frontiers in psychology, 4, 384. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2013.00384

31/08/2022

Pet ownership is an important nonhuman form of social support and may provide cardioprotective benefits in patients with established CVD. In a substudy of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial (CAST), 1-year survival data were assessed in 369 study participants on the basis of whether or not the participant owned a pet. Overall, pet ownership of any kind tended to be independently associated with survival. Dog ownership was strongly associated with decreased mortality, with the likelihood of mortality being over 4 times greater for dog nonowners than for dog owners; the benefit of dog ownership on survival was independent of physiological measures or the severity of CVD.
