MULTIDISCIPLINARY MEETINGS
A multidisciplinary meeting may be called at any time before, during or after a patient’s treatment, for various reasons:
• To clarify diagnosis
• To define goals of treatment
• To present treatment options available to patient
• To make recommendations regarding treatment modalities (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, nutrition, pain management, rehabilitation, reconstruction surgery etc.) and/or sequencing of treatment (preoperative, postoperative, concurrent)
• To coordinate treatment
• To follow-up patient interim or after treatment and make recommendations for any change of plans or further treatment or evaluation

The benefits of such a discourse are manifold:
• Consultation becomes more comprehensive.
• The most essential laboratory examinations, imaging and work-ups to be done are agreed in consensus, saving the patient both time and money.
• Care and management in general becomes tailored to the patient and coordinated. Once a consensus is reached, the defined goals of treatment, treatment options and the associated benefits and risks are presented to the patient, who will now make the final decision regarding his care and management.
