Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the brain and the nervous system of not only animals, but also humans. It is a zoonotic tropical disease most commonly transmitted through the bites and scratches of infected animals, with 99% of human rabies cases coming from dogs. Once clinical symptoms appear and the virus infects the central nervous system, rabies is fatal in 100% of cases. Even though it is fatal, it is also 100% preventable through proper observation and timely vaccination.
The Philippines continues to face challenges in eliminating rabies. In 2024, the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 426 deaths due to rabies. Furthermore, a total of 1750 Filipinos have died due to rabies from 2020 to 2024. From January to September of 2025 alone, rabies cases reached 260. Although the number is lower than the previous year, it remains alarming since these deaths could have been prevented through simple awareness, immediate medical consultation, and responsible pet vaccination.
Under Executive Order No. 84, March is declared ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก in the Philippines. This month highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership, including regular vaccinations of pets. It also emphasizes the importance of awareness when at risk for rabies and the immediate seeking of medical consultation.
Let every month, not only March, serve as a reminder that while rabies is almost always fatal, it is easily preventable.
