To deepen our understanding of how gender-based violence (GBV) and patriarchy are structurally intertwined, please watch the Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho segment titled: "Babae mula Cagayan de Oro City, nabulag matapos buhusan ng asido ang mukha."

The link to the video is:
https://youtu.be/bOKfxboJeoo?si=z6BegV4I5v5alli1

As you watch this episode, please look beyond the immediate tragedy and critically analyze the underlying power dynamics that fueled this act of violence. Focus on how the "if I can’t have you, no one can" mentality serves as a violent manifestation of patriarchal views that treat women as property rather than individuals with agency. Consider the chilling intent behind disfigurement, and reflect on why acid attacks specifically target a woman’s face to strip away her perceived social value and place within a beauty-centric society. Finally, identify any systemic failures in the narrative - instances where our social or legal structures may have been complicit by failing to provide the protection or intervention necessary to prevent such a devastating outcome.

An excerpt of the whole episode is provided here which highlights the message of empowerment by our very own Archie Lawrence P. Geneta, DBS Faculty and current chairperson.

The story of Punch, a young Japanese macaque who formed a strong attachment to an IKEA plush toy after being rejected by his mother, highlights several important ideas in behavioral science. Seeking comfort in the toy, Punch demonstrated the human-like need for emotional security and attachment. His behavior reflects how individuals cope with stress and loneliness by finding alternative sources of support.

Over time, Punch gradually interacted more with other monkeys and became less dependent on the toy, showing how social environments play a key role in development and adaptation. His story reminds us that behavior is shaped not only by biological factors but also by emotional and social experiences.

For the Department of Behavioral Sciences, this serves as a meaningful reminder that learning environments should be supportive and inclusive. When students feel emotionally safe and connected, they are better able to adapt, engage, and grow both academically and socially.
