Magic Missile is the first offensive spell available for arcane spellcaster classes in the famed RPG series, Dungeons & Dragons.

Previous designs of Vengeful Spirit showed her with a mask that looked similar to her Vengeance Aura ability icon.
Vengeful Spirit's fun name, "820", is a tribute to former professional DotA player 820.

In DotA1, she was the sister of Mortred, the Phantom Assassin, and her name was Shendelzare Silkwood. In Dota 2, her lore was changed so that she became affiliated with the Skywrath, thus switching her affiliations to Dragonus, the Skywrath Mage.

Dota 2 trivia:

In DotA, Ulfsaar's alternate name was Fuzzy Wuzzy. This is referenced in one of his spawning lines, where he calls himself "Fuzzy Wuzzy". He does not use his actual name, Ulfsaar, in any of his responses. Lone Druid is the only one who calls him Ulfsaar.

In Latin, the word "ursa" means bear. In Portuguese, however, it specifically refers to a female bear. Despite this, Ulfsaar is clearly depicted as male both in his bio (where it is referred to as a "he") and in his in-game dialogue.

Ursa's response to killing an enemy Batrider makes reference to the 1940's Anti forest fire mascot "Smokey the Bear".

Treant Protector has "Riki was here" carved into his side (near the left-handed runes on his belt).

Treant Protector's appearance, name, and voice are based heavily on Treebeard, the eldest of the Ent race, who appears in the Lord of the Rings books and movies.

Sven's name is a reference to Sven-Ole Thorsen, a Danish bodybuilder and actor.
In an earlier version of DotA, Sven had a fun name called Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The phrases "Twas only a flesh wound" and "It was but a scratch" are references to the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Riki's fun/alternate name was Riki Martin, which is a pun on Ricky Martin, a famous Latino pop singer.

Riki's line upon dying, "Good assassins never die… they just fade away.'", is a reference to a quote by General Douglas MacArthur, "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away."

Riki's line "There are none so stabbed as those who will not see." is a reference to A Christmas Carol where a blind woman says, "I am not so blind as those who will not see.".

Dota 2 trivia:

Queen of Pain's dying line "Your queen is dead" is possibly a reference to The Smiths' album, The Queen is Dead.

Most of Queen of Pain's abilities were derived from the Warcraft III Night Elf hero, the Warden, with Sonic Wave being the only new ability introduced, replacing Vengeance. Fan of Knives was also substituted for Scream of Pain with the same effect, though an older version of Queen of Pain did have the Fan of Knives ability.

Dota 2 trivia:

Mortred is derived from Mordred, a character in the Arthurian legend who betrayed and fought King Arthur at the Battle of Camalann.

"Coup de grâce" is a French term (pronounced "coo d'grahss") which literally means "blow of mercy", and refers to the killing blow of a wounded person or animal, friendly or not, to end their suffering.

Mortred's level-up line "I'm an immaterial girl!" is probably a reference to the song Material Girl performed by Madonna.

In DotA: Allstars, Blur caused Mortred to become transparent, scaling with levels and making her nearly invisible and untargetable to unexperienced players, thus her title "Phantom Assassin".

Dota 2 Trivia:

The line "First blood! Out of fifty possibilities, that was my preferred." is because there actually are 50 possible first bloods (each of 10 heroes can be killed by any of the 5 opposing heroes).

Oracle's spell Purifying Flames and his phrase "I must harm to heal." are a direct play on the medical principle "Primum non nocere", which is latin and translates into "First, do no harm".

The hero kill line "Ask again later." is a reference to an answer of the Magic 8-ball, a toy used for fortune-telling.

The respawn line "Like the past, I'm never dead. I'm not even past." is a reference to the novel Requiem for a Nun from the author William Faulkner. The original quote goes The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Many of Night Stalker's responses that refer to his vampiric qualities make reference to Bram Stoker's Dracula, a film adaptation of the classic novel starring Gary Oldman.

Night stalker's line "If I ever get my claws on that bird." is likely a reference to the rooster that crows when the game transitions from night-time to daytime.

Night Stalker's deep and raspy voice is a possible reference to Batman.

Monkey King's default weapon is based on the in-game item, Monkey King Bar. Mischief​'s lore line Watch out for that tree is a reference to George of the Jungle, a classic comedy film.

The Monkey King concept has been widely used throughout the ARTS/MOBA genre, with other Monkey King heroes appearing in League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, Vainglory, Strife, and SMITE.

The emblem on a ground made by Primal Spring​ is called a bagua, which is a Daoist symbol that represents the fundamental principles of reality.
