It's the 36th weekly questionπŸ₯³

But before we get into it, let's answer last week's practice question, found here: https://web.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1365684048899806&set=a.441701964631357

Answer: A) Vitamin K
Explanation: RA 11148, also known as the "Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act," explicitly mandates the provision of Vitamin K prophylaxis to newborns within 28 days postpartum to prevent Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB). While Vitamin A supplementation is given for postpartum/lactating women and children starting at 6 months, iron is prioritized for pregnant women and later in infancy for anemia prevention, and Vitamin B12 is not specifically mandated in the Act, Vitamin K is the one explicitly stated for immediate newborn care.

NDLE Topnotcher Tip #6: Don’t Forget the Basics ✨

When the review season gets overwhelming with complex topics, remember this: the exam still tests you a lot (I repeat, A LOT) on the fundamentals. πŸ“š

Mastering the basics (e.g., functions and other names of vitamins, cellular organelles, the food exchange list, clinical signs of malnutrition, etc.) gives you the strongest foundation. Even the toughest questions usually trace back to these essentials.

Don’t skip the simple stuff thinking they’re β€œtoo easy.” You might forget these during the exam, and you may end up regretting that you've overlooked them. These basics can spell the difference between passing and topping the exam.

Stay grounded in the fundamentals, and you’ll be more confident tackling the advanced parts! 🌟

In need of more resources and practice questions? The πŸ‘π‘πƒ π„πƒπˆπ“πˆπŽπ of our reviewer is now available to order. Answer: C) Fructose
Explanation: Among the monosaccharides, fructose is absorbed exclusively by facilitated diffusion through the GLUT5 transporter in the small intestine. In contrast, glucose and galactose are primarily absorbed via active transport using the sodium-dependent glucose transporter (SGLT1), though they can also use GLUT2 under certain conditions. Mannose is not a major dietary monosaccharide and is absorbed inefficiently.

Answer: A) Penicillium roqueforti
Explanation: Penicillium roqueforti is a mold intentionally used in the production of blue cheeses such as Roquefort, Stilton, and Gorgonzola, where it provides the distinct flavor and characteristic blue-green veining. In contrast, Aspergillus flavus is not used in cheese-making because it produces aflatoxins, which are toxic and carcinogenic. Clostridium botulinum is also not involved in cheese production; instead, it is a dangerous pathogen responsible for botulism, making it a major food safety concern. Finally, while Aspergillus oryzae is a beneficial mold, its role is specific to the fermentation of products such as soy sauce, miso, and sake, not cheese.

Answer: D. An intake of a nutrient
Explanation: In nutritional epidemiology, exposure variables (aka independent variables) typically refer to dietary factors such as nutrient intake, food groups, or dietary patterns. These exposures are then analyzed in relation to outcome variables (aka dependent variables) such as diseases, health events, or mortality. BMI may be studied as either an exposure or outcome variable, but nutrient intake is the most direct example of exposure. Diseases and health events are generally classified as outcomes.

Answer: A. Produce and release trypsin, chymotrypsin, and other proteases
Explanation: The small intestine is the main site for digestion and absorption of nutrients (B), secretes important hormones such as GLP-1 and peptide YY (C), and reabsorbs bile salts for enterohepatic circulation (D) (specifically performed by the ileum). However, trypsin and chymotrypsin are not produced by the small intestines. They are synthesized and secreted by the pancreas, then activated in the intestinal lumen. Thus, option A is not a function of the small intestine. Option E is incorrect since there is one correct exception.
