Eating Your Fruits and Veggies Helps Keep Your Mind Sharp
There are a lot of causes of mental decline as we age. Some factors are out of our control, like genetics or certain medical conditions. However, there are some factors we can control like our diet and activity level.
A new study of elderly adults in Singapore looked at the possible connection between antioxidant intake and cognitive health. Researchers found that the individuals with the highest vitamin C intake (an indicator of fruit and vegetable intake) had a 16% lower risk of cognitive decline that the group with the lowest intake.
In this study population, higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and flavonoids were all inversely associated with cognitive impairment.
