Band and Loop Space Maintainer
They are fixed, unilateral appliances used to prevent space loss after the premature loss of a single primary molar. They are primarily indicated to maintain arch perimeter following the loss of primary first or second molars
Ensuring enough space for permanent successors.
Key Indications:
Premature loss of a single primary molar:
The most common indication, whether it is the first or second primary molar.
Unilateral posterior space maintenance:
Specifically used when one side of the arch needs space maintenance without affecting the opposite side.
Before permanent molar eruption:
Used to maintain space before the first permanent molar erupts, preventing mesial migration.
Prior to premolar eruption:
Indicated when there is significant time before the permanent premolar is expected to erupt.
Bilateral loss in specific cases:
It can be used as a bilateral, non-functional, fixed, and passive space maintainer.
Often used when the primary second molar is present to serve as an anchor.
Premature loss of a primary second molar:
If the first permanent molar is not erupted enough to support a different, more robust appliance.
Replacement of a single tooth:
Specifically indicated to replace a single missing tooth, keeping it from shifting.
