This year's world hearing day theme "Changing Mindsets: Empower Yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all" aims inspire individuals to change their views and behavior on the importance of hearing health in order to protect individuals from harmful loud sounds and to prevent hearing loss, it also aims to promote regular hearing health evaluation and consultations, the use of hearing device if needed, and specially to build a support system for those individuals with hearing loss. Through this campaign we will be able to drive change among individuals and in society as a whole.

It is through these simple steps by each individual that we can achieve a greater impact in the community.

02.20.2025 | Renewal of Contract Signing with the Provincial Government of Bataan

As part of the 5th year anniversary celebration of Una Bella Hearing Center, a contract signing was held at the Governor's Office this afternoon at the Bunker.

Una Bella Hearing Center is the first Hospital Based Public-Private Partnership in the Province located inside Mariveles District Hospital through the assistance of Bataan Public Private Partnership & Investment Center.

The said partnership aims to promote a healthy and better hearing for all Bataeños, by providing accessible and affordable hearing health needs for the community.

What is speech disorder in children? As parents, how do we go about handling it?

A child with speech disorder has difficulties saying all speech sounds in words, making speech hard to understand. The cause(s) of the speech sound disorder can be linked to things such as a cleft palate, problems with the teeth, hearing loss, or difficulty controlling the movements of the mouth.

Some indications of speech disorder include:
• The child doesn't babble using consonant sounds (particularly b, d, m, and n) by age 8 or 9 months.
• The child uses mostly vowel sounds or gestures to communicate after 18 months.
• The child’s speech cannot be understood by many people at age 3.
• The child’s speech is difficult to understand at age 4 or older.

As parents, we can help the child by giving lots of opportunities to listen to speech and to talk. This can be done frequently by pointing out and naming important people, places, and things. We can also read and talk to the child throughout the day, especially during daily routines, interactive plays, and favourite activities. We can give the child models of words and sentences to repeat.

If you have concerns about your child’s communication skills, discuss them with your child’s doctor. The doctor will likely refer the child to a speech-language pathologist for evaluation and treatment, because all children with speech and language disorders should also have their hearing tested.

What is Balance Disorder?

Balance disorder is a condition that causes a person to feel unstable, dizzy, confused, or feel a sensation of movement, spinning, or floating.

The organs in our inner ear have a labyrinth which is an important part of our vestibular (balance) system. This labyrinth interacts with other systems in the body, such as the visual system (eyes) and the skeleton (bones and joints), to maintain our body position. Because it works together with the brain and nervous system, the vestibular can also be a source of balance problems.

When a person's balance is disturbed, he or she will have difficulty maintaining orientation. For example, a person may experience a "spinning room" effect, feels dizzy (Vertigo), and may not be able to walk without staggering, or even unable to stand.

If you experience conditions like this, we recommend that you consult your nearest doctor so that it can be followed up immediately.

🤷 Do you know?
Is ear wax something dirty or unwanted?
Is it a sign of bad ear health or hygiene?

The answer is a big NO. It is a natural secretion of the ear and has a lot of benefits. It stops the dust from getting in and protects the delicate ear canal. Ear wax normally helps in lubrication of the ear canal. It also prevents bacteria, fungal infection and water getting in. In fact, the total absence of earwax may lead to dry ears resulting in itching and flaking of the Ear Canal.

The recommended home remedy for earwax removal is with the use of Hydrogen peroxide. The basic idea is to soften the accumulated wax and dislodge it without using an external object. Using foreign objects may hurt our ears. Doctors use forceps and other metal tools as they are experts in earwax removal. One can also use earwax removal drops marketed by pharmaceutical companies.

If the ear wax is too hard and the home remedy does not work, it is advisable to see your ENT Doctor.
