Assalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu.

In line with AL-SABAR’s Naseeha Initiative, we are honored to present reminders rooted in faith and wisdom from our alumni, offered to inspire, guide, and uplift our barristers as they place their trust in Allah and strive with excellence for the 2025 Bar Examinations. These messages will be shared over the coming days, each one a beacon of encouragement on our barristers' journeys.

----------

Assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu.

To my beloved brothers and sisters, the Bar exams are fast approaching. This is the final challenge facing you after years of toiling and striving in law school. And as you always found a way to meet the challenges and rise in law school, I have full faith that you shall also meet the challenge and rise above this final challenge that is the Bar dragon. However, let me remind you that in facing the Bar exams, while we should exert all efforts to make sure we are prepared, we must not forget that we, alone, would not be enough to slay the Bar dragon. Ika nga, “do your best and let God do the rest”. We must not forget that all blessings are only made possible if the Almighty Allah grants it to us. We must not forget that we can only do so much and the rest would have to be granted by the Almighty Allah. So in your preparations, do not forget to pray. To give thanks. To ask for guidance. Because only with the blessings of Allah will we be able to vanquish the Bar dragon.

And also remember that in this journey, you are never alone. Behind you will be your friends, your family, your classmates, and most especially, the Al-Sabar.

So go forward with full confidence that you are ready for this. Go forward armed with your preparations and our prayers that the Almighty Allah will grant upon you His blessings.

A final word, “walang imposible sa taong naniniwala”. Maniwala sa sarili. Maniwala sa preparasyon. At higit sa lahat, maniwala sa Allah.

Wassalam.

The use of restraints and pin-downs, where children are physically held or forced to the floor to control their behavior, is a dangerous and unethical practice. While some believe these methods help manage aggressive or disruptive behavior, they can cause serious physical and psychological harm. Many professional organizations, including the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), strongly discourage the use of physical restraints due to the risk of trauma, injury, and loss of trust between the child and caregiver. Children, especially those with developmental conditions like autism or ADHD, need supportive and respectful interventions, not forceful control.

Physically restraining a child can lead to severe emotional distress, increasing anxiety, fear, and aggression instead of reducing it. Children who experience pin-downs may develop post-traumatic stress, fear of adults, and difficulty regulating emotions. In extreme cases, improper restraints have resulted in serious injuries. Instead of helping a child learn self-regulation, these methods can make behavioral challenges worse by reinforcing fear and helplessness. Research consistently shows that positive behavior support, sensory regulation strategies, and co-regulation techniques are far more effective in helping children manage their emotions and behavior.

In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 7610 protects children from abuse, cruelty, and harmful punishment. Restraining a child to the floor, especially when done forcefully or without proper safeguards, may constitute child abuse under this law. The Supreme Court of the Philippines has ruled that acts causing psychological or physical harm to a child are punishable, reinforcing the need for safe and ethical behavioral interventions. Using physical force as a means of control violates a child’s right to safety and dignity and should not be accepted as a standard practice in therapy or education. Parents have the right to ask if any form of restraint is being used on their child. They should be fully informed about the interventions being applied and ensure that their child is being treated with respect and care.

In my own practice, I strongly reject the use of restraints and pin-downs. Instead, I focus on compassionate, evidence-based approaches that help children regulate their emotions in a safe and supportive way. I use calming techniques, sensory regulation, and individualized behavior plans to address challenging behaviors. Every child deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and I am committed to using therapeutic methods that protect their well-being rather than cause harm. Restraining or pinning a child down is never the answer—we must always choose gentle and effective interventions that foster trust, emotional growth, and self-regulation.
