Common Eye Disorders
The following list gives a brief description of common eye disorders..
Age-related macular degeneration. The age-related breaking down, or degeneration, of the macula area of the retina of the eye.
Amblyopia. A reduction of vision in an eye that appears to be otherwise normal.
Astigmatism. A condition in which an abnormal curvature of the cornea makes objects up close and at a distance appear blurry.
Blepharitis. An inflammation of the edges of the eyelids involving hair follicles and glands, which help to wet the surface of the eye.
Cataract. A condition in which the lens of the eye becomes dense or opaque and does not properly transmit light.
Chalazion. A small bump that develops on the upper or lower eyelid. It is caused by inflamed meibomian glands that make the oil in tears.
Conjunctivitis. Sometimes called pink eye, this is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the sclera and inside of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis may be caused by bacteria or viruses, making it very contagious.
Diabetic retinopathy. A disorder of the retina resulting from damage to the blood vessels in the retina. It is found in some people who have diabetes.
Dry eye. This happens when there is not enough moisture in the eye, causing it to feel dry, sandy, and gritty. Dry eye may be caused by low humidity, smoke, aging, certain diseases, and certain medicines (for example, antihistamines or decongestants).
Floaters. These appear as spots, dots, or lines and affect or interrupt vision. Floaters are usually caused by bits of debris in the vitreous humor.
Glaucoma. A disease that damages the optic nerve when fluid and pressure build up in the eye leading to vision loss.
Farsightedness (hyperopia). This means a person has trouble seeing clearly up close.
Iritis. An inflammation of the iris of the eye.
Nearsightedness (myopia). This means a person has trouble seeing clearly at a distance.
Presbyopia. Another type of farsightedness. It is caused when the center of the eye lens hardens, making it unable to accommodate near vision.
Retina detachment. Separation of the retina from the back of the eye.
Retinitis pigmentosa. A group of hereditary eye disorders that involve the retina and the retinal pigment epithelium. They cause a gradual, yet progressive, loss or reduction in vision.
Crossed eyes (strabismus). Misalignment of the eyes.
Stye. A noncontagious bacterial infection of one of the sebaceous glands of the eyelid, which is often tender to the touch. A stye looks like a small, red bump either on the eyelid or on the edge of the eyelid.
Uveitis. A condition that causes inflammation in the uvea, or the middle layer of the eye. Because the uvea contains the blood vessels that supply nutrients to the eye, any form of uveitis may be serious. It may be a side effect of other serious conditions.

Stress Related Disorders
Stress-related disorders include mental health disorders that develop as a result of anxiety-related issues due to physical, mental, or emotional health problems. Some of the most common stress-related illnesses include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Stress is the result of a conscious or unconscious feeling or thought resulting from a traumatic event or pressures placed upon a person mentally or physically. In this case, the pressure placed on the individual may seem, to them, to exceed their physical or mental capabilities. A person may become stressed if they feel threatened, harmed, or challenged by someone else. However, stress has a significant impact on a person's physical and mental health.
The way stress is experienced is very unique and particular to the individual. Stress depends on the overall implications and triggering effects a certain situation may place on a person. This can either be the result of physical experiences or be genetic. In cases of both acute and chronic stress-related disorders, the morbidity rate of the individual increases exponentially - especially in cases of prolonged stress and anxiety.
Is Stress a Mental Disorder?
Stress itself is not considered a mental disorder. Many people will experience stressful situations in which they may feel overwhelmed, however, that alone does not characterize stress-related disorders. Although some disorders from stress may result in symptoms similar to depression and anxiety disorders, people who have suffered through a traumatic experience may experience stress-related symptoms that may appear completely unrelated to the event. In some cases, people may experience violent impulses, aggressive behavior, inability to experience pleasure, restlessness, discontent, numbness, and dissociative tendencies. Severe cases of stress-related issues may develop into other forms of mental illness.

What are the 3 Different Types of Stress?
In psychology, there are three different types of stress: acute, episodic acute, and chronic.
Acute:
Acute stress is a commonly experienced form of stress. It is defined by more recent influences that have caused a person to feel overwhelmed - whether it be dealings with recently passed events or pressure toward future performance. In some cases, it may be a helpful and thrilling experience that is met with joy, but over time may become exhausting or begin to affect the person's mental health. If someone is a thrill seeker, the stress aligned with their exhilaration might come from a momentary fear for their safety, but soon passes as they accomplish their goal. However, in large doses, it can become exhausting and result in symptoms such as: distress, headaches, body aches, and nausea.
Episodic Acute:
At times, some individuals may suffer from frequent episodes of acute stress. This may be derived from an excessive sense of doom, fear of the unknown, pessimistic beliefs or tendencies, or being placed in situations which cause them to be consistently overwhelmed. In some cases, this can be a result of lifestyle choices, habits, occupation, or abusive situations. Some of the most common symptoms of episodic stress are: tension headaches, migraines, high blood pressure, chest pains, and, at times, can lead to heart disease.
Chronic:
Chronic stress is the result of prolonged, frequent battles with anxiety, fear, and foreboding. This can occur as a result of an individual seeing no way out of their painful situation or recurring traumatic events. These can include: financial struggles, dysfunction in the home, marriage troubles, or feeling trapped in an unsatisfactory occupation. Some cases of chronic stress form from childhood trauma or recent traumatic event that has desolated the person's mental health over time. People who suffer from chronic stress are at risk of developing stress-related disorders, suffer from severe depression, suicidal thoughts, impulsive acts of violence, heart attacks, strokes, and other health-related issues.

What are the Symptoms of Stress Disorders?
Stress disorder symptoms commonly manifest themselves in four different categories.
• Intrusion symptoms: involves recurring painful memories, thoughts, and nightmares connected to a traumatic event - flashbacks, dissociative experiences, and feelings of recurring events.
• Avoidance symptoms are physical or mental actions taken in order to prevent or avoid painful internal or external stressors. At times, these actions can overcome the person's life where they spend the majority of their day ensuring they avoid any and all activities that may trigger a traumatic experience.
• Negative alterations: are symptoms which affect the mood and cognitive abilities of the individual. These can include related disorders or bouts of depression, feelings of fear, shame, and isolation.
• Hyper-arousal symptoms are impulsive by nature and may include physical effects such as: hyperactivity, irritability, violent outbursts, self-harm, concentration issues, and insomnia.
What Are Some Stress Related Disorders?
There are five common stress-related disorders.
Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)
Reactive attachment disorder is defined by an inability to express emotional or physical attachment to others. In children, symptoms may include a disinterest in physical or emotional comfort when distressed or a lack of responsive emotions. At times, this is a result of neglect and lack of proper caregiving in order for the child to develop relationships. In adults, these symptoms may increase and hinder them from forming close relationships and potentially lead to other mental illnesses.
Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder
Disinhibited social engagement disorder is a stress-related disorder characterized by behavior deemed culturally and socially inappropriate. This can include inappropriate behavior, oversharing intimate information, or close, physical familiarity with strangers.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Post-traumatic stress disorder is the result of past traumatic events significantly impacting the person's mental health. This is often the result of reliving, remembering, or having nightmares associated with past trauma.
Acute Stress Disorder
Acute stress disorder or episodic acute distress order is similar in effect to PTSD, but typically holds a shorter duration following the stressful situation.
Adjustment Disorder
Adjustment disorder is a disorder that presents itself with symptoms with an identifiable cause. These may include work-related stressors, moving to a different state, environmental or lifestyle changes, or educational shifts. Adjustment disorder is typically a short-term experience and changes as the person becomes more comfortable with the change.
What are the 6 Types of Anxiety Disorders?
Anxiety disorders are closely related to stress disorders. More often than not, feelings of stress are a result of anxiety regarding a past traumatic event, internal fears, or obsessive thoughts and tendencies. The six types of anxiety disorder associated with stress disorders include:
Generalized Anxiety: consists of fear of the future, anxiety regarding altered schedules, a sense of incompleteness, and more. This disorder might have physical implications such as fatigue, sleeping disorders, increased heart rate, inability to focus, muscle stress or soreness, or worry.
Agoraphobia: Agoraphobia is the feeling of intense fear where escape may be challenging or uncomfortable to experience. Agoraphobia may also include the fear of being unaccompanied outdoors. When agoraphobia is left untreated, it can lead to an illogical fear of leaving home or being alone.
Panic Disorder: Panic disorder is a recurring experience of extreme stress, anxiety, and worry. Panic disorder is most commonly connected with erratic anxiety attacks or other intense sensations of stress, anxiety, or fear.
Phobias: A phobia is an intense fear of an item, person, place, or thing. Different phobias may consist of the fear or flying, the fear of clowns, spiders, public speaking, enclosures, and more.
Social Anxiety Disorder: Social anxiety disorder or social phobia, is common stress and anxiety condition that encompasses public speaking, fear of remaining in public spaces, or aversions to social interactions. Social phobia does not just involve the fear of public speaking but can include eating or drinking in public, casual social settings, or leaving the house.
Separation Anxiety Disorder: Separation stress and anxiety is an extreme, illogical worry of being separated from a loved one. This worry can arise when the person is present or absent (fear of them leaving for a specific reason, or fear of them being harmed while apart).

WHAT IS A NEUROLOGIC DISORDER?
A neurologic disorder is caused by a dysfunction in the brain or nervous system (i.e. spinal cord and nerves). This dysfunction can result in physical and psychological symptoms.
The brain begins developing before birth. It continues developing throughout infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Most brain cells form before birth. One type of cell is the neuron, or nerve cell. Trillions of connections exist between neurons. These do not develop until infancy.
The brain is composed of:
• Gray matter. Neurons and the connections between them make up gray matter.
• White matter. Long fibers called axons make up white matter. An outer layer called the myelin sheath protects them.
A motor neuron carries impulses away from the brain.
The brain is self-organizing. It selects information to forward its growth. It also adapts to the environment. An individual experiences their environment through:
• Touch
• Smell
• Sight
• Taste
• Hearing
These senses produce connections in the brain.
Neurologic disorders involve the brain, spinal column, and nerves. Symptoms depend on where damage occurs. Affected areas may control:
• Movement
• Sensation
• Communication
• Vision
• Hearing
• Thinking
• Emotion
Neurologic disorders are wide ranging. They have various causes, complications, and outcomes. Many require life-long management.
Symptoms vary as well. Types of symptoms include:
• Physical
• Cognitive (or thinking)
• Emotional
• Behavioral
Specific disorders have combinations or clusters of these symptoms. For example, cerebral palsy tends to have more physical symptoms. ADHD tends to affect behavior more.
Many neurologic disorders emerge during the early years of development. They may be diagnosed at birth. Some are diagnosed later. Symptoms may only appear when:
• A child misses developmental milestones or has developmental difficulties (such as with autism)
• A damaging infection occurs (such as with meningitis)
• An accident causes brain injury (such as with a stroke, trauma)

Tooth Pain
If you’re experiencing tooth pain, whether sharp and throbbing or dull and achy, it can be difficult to bite and chew, concentrate, get through the day, even sleep at night, no matter what over-the-counter medication you take for some relief.
The source of tooth pain may be dental decay, a cracked tooth, or an infection. Regardless of the cause, if you have ongoing pain it’s time to see a dentist or endodontist for treatment. In the meantime, read on for information on common pain symptoms, possible causes and some steps you can take to ease the discomfort.

Primary headaches
A primary headache is caused by over activity of or problems with pain-sensitive structures in your head. A primary headache isn't a symptom of an underlying disease.
Chemical activity in your brain, the nerves or blood vessels surrounding your skull, or the muscles of your head and neck (or some combination of these factors) can play a role in primary headaches. Some people may also carry genes that make them more likely to develop such headaches.
The most common primary headaches are:
• Cluster headache
• Migraine
• Migraine with aura
• Tension headache
• Trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia (TAC), such as cluster headache and paroxysmal hemicrania
A few headache patterns also are generally considered types of primary headache, but are less common. These headaches have distinct features, such as an unusual duration or pain associated with a certain activity.
Although generally considered primary, each could be a symptom of an underlying disease. They include:
• Chronic daily headaches (for example, chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache, or hemicranias continua)
• Cough headaches
• Exercise headaches
• S*x headaches
Some primary headaches can be triggered by lifestyle factors, including:
• Alcohol, particularly red wine
• Certain foods, such as processed meats that contain nitrates
• Changes in sleep or lack of sleep
• Poor posture
• Skipped meals
• Stress
Secondary headaches
A secondary headache is a symptom of a disease that can activate the pain-sensitive nerves of the head. Any number of conditions — varying greatly in severity — may cause secondary headaches.
Possible causes of secondary headaches include:
• Acute sinusitis (nasal and sinus infection)
• Arterial tears (carotid or vertebral dissections)
• Blood clot (venous thrombosis) within the brain — separate from stroke
• Brain aneurysm
• Brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation)
• Brain tumor
• Carbon monoxide poisoning
• Chiari malformation (structural problem at the base of your skull)
• Concussion
• Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)
• Dehydration
• Dental problems
• Ear infection (middle ear)
• Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
• Giant cell arteritis (inflammation of the lining of the arteries)
• Glaucoma (acute angle closure glaucoma)
• Hangovers
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Influenza (flu) and other febrile (fever) illnesses
• Intracranial hematoma
• Medications to treat other disorders
• Meningitis
• Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
• Overuse of pain medication
• Panic attacks and panic disorder
• Persistent post-concussive symptoms (Post-concussion syndrome)
• Pressure from tight headgear, such as a helmet or goggles
• Pseudotumor cerebri (idiopathic intracranial hypertension)
• Stroke
• Toxoplasmosis
• Trigeminal neuralgia (as well as other neuralgias, all involving irritation of certain nerves connecting the face and brain)
Some types of secondary headaches include:
• (commonly called brain freeze)
• Medication overuse headaches (caused by overuse of pain medication)
• Sinus headaches (caused by inflammation and congestion in sinus cavities)
• Spinal headaches (caused by low pressure or volume of cerebrospinal fluid, possibly the result of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak, spinal tap or spinal anesthesia)
• Thunderclap headaches (a group of disorders that involves sudden, severe headaches with multiple causes)
