JUST IN: Health Sec. Ted Herbosa says the 2 deaths in Siquijor weren't due to glander but melioidosis, a bacterial infection that affects both humans and animals: It was just reported to me this morning. According to the DNA analysis of the bacteria, it’s melioidosis.

According to the US CDC, melioidosis has similar symptoms to other diseases and may be mistaken for other diseases. Disseminated infection can affect other organ systems and can even cause sepsis.

Herbosa says melioidosis is also zoonotic.

"Huwag kakain ng mga hayop na namatay sa sakit. Sa mga farmer, mga lumulusong sa putik ang recommendation namin, magbota talaga sila. Lalo na dun sa isla ng Siquijor," he said. | via Raphael Bosano, ABS-CBN News
