Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center The Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center serves as a Technology Hub for Innovations, R&D, and Support Services for the food industry in Northern Mindanao.

The Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center (NMFIC) is established through the collaboration of DOST, DTI, MUST, FOPANORMIN and the Office of the 2nd Congressional District of CDO. The center which is located at MUST serves as a Technology Hub for Innovations, Research and Development (R&D), and Support Services for the food industry in Northern Mindanao. It is envisioned that through the center,

support technical expertise, relevant Science and Technology (S&T) services, infrastructure and facility requirements, will be moreaccessible for the Food Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the countryside. Provision of such facility will gear towards a more efficient technology development and transfer, facilitate commercialization of technologies, for a sustainable local economic growth and productivity. The generation of significant research results and technological progress will lead to achieving competitive advantage. This vital step transforms research results to innovative products and services. However, the translation of theory into practice requires relevant facilities for commercialization and most often these types of facilities are not available locally. Thus, the need for a center wherein both R&D and commercialization activities can be conducted. Through this, the center will bring innovation into the local MSMEs of the food processing industry.

On June 10, 2025, Mr. Fabio Jr. D. Guno, a full-time faculty member of the Food Science and Technology Department and a designated technical researcher from the Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center, conducted a one-day training on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) for Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organizations (ARBOs) in Misamis Oriental.

The training was organized by the Department of Trade and Industryโ€™s Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (DTI CARP), in collaboration with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), to support ARBOs in their efforts to obtain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensing. The Mananum Bag-o Farmers Multi-purpose Cooperative, a priority ARBO located in Medina, Misamis Oriental, served as the host site and primary beneficiary of the activity.

The seminar aimed to assist ARBOs in complying with one of the FDAโ€™s key inspection requirementsโ€”obtaining a GMP compliance certificateโ€”by equipping them with essential knowledge and practices that promote food safety and product quality. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the capacity of ARBOs to become licensed and competitive manufacturers in the local domestic market.

The faculty and staff of the City College of Cagayan de Oro (CCCDO) visited the NMFICโ€™s Center as part of their Lakbay Aral: Experiential Learning program.

The activity was warmly hosted and moderated by the USTP-Extension and Community Relations Office, beginning with a comprehensive presentation on USTPโ€™s Innovation Framework, followed by an insightful facility tour.

As part of their โ€œInnovation Essentials: A Training on Starting and Sustaining Innovative Practices,โ€ CCCDO participants toured our Food Processing Facility, where they explored innovative processes and sustainable practices that can enrich their own research and academic initiatives.The visit provided them with practical knowledge and strategic insights to enhance their capabilities and drive meaningful academic and developmental advancements.

This benchmarking activity does not only strengthen institutional ties but also empowers educators with valuable hands-on experiences that they can bring back to their classrooms and research initiativesโ€”fueling innovation, discovery, and growth.

From May 7-9, 2025, a successful 3-day training session was held for Josephus, an MSME, focused on the operation of water retorts. The first day covered essential theoretical topics, including introduction to water retort, its purpose, component familiarization, and operational safety.

The following days were dedicated to hands-on practice, where participants worked with real products like RTE Dinuguan and Paksiw. By the end of the training, all attendees had gained the skills to operate the water retort confidently and independently.

At the conclusion of the program, each participant was awarded a Certificate of Completion, recognizing their commitment and achievement. ๐ŸŽ“
