Leptospirosis After A Flood
Leptospirosis is a disease caused by bacterium Leptospira. It is spread to people and animals from exposure to water or soil contaminated with urine of infected animals, mostly rodents.
If not treated, leptospirosis can cause kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, trouble breathing, and even death.
Here are some tips to lower the risk of getting infected with leptospirosis:
• Don't swim or wade in water that might be contaminated with animal urine.
• Avoid contact with animals that may be infected.
• Cover your cuts or scratches with waterproof bandages.
• Wear waterproof protective clothing, shoes or boots if exposure to flood water is unavoidable.
Be safe!
