Did you know?

March is designated as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Let's take the time to educate ourselves with vital information about this disease.

✅️ Colorectal cancer is currently the most common cancer of the gastrointestinal tract among Filipinos.
✅️ Older age, male gender, obesity, cigarette smoking, increased consumption of red meat, alcohol, physical inactivity, or a family history of CRC or advanced adenoma increases the risk of CRC.
✅️ CRC can be prevented by early detection and removal of precursor colonic polyps. Diagnosis and treatment at an early stage is associated with good survival.
✅️ Screening for CRC should start at 50 y/o for average-risk and earlier for high-risk individuals.
✅️ F***l occult blood tests, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy are recommended screening examinations for CRC.
✅️ Colonoscopy is the preferred modality in the detection and treatment of premalignant colonic lesions.
✅️ Surveillance colonoscopy is recommended in asymptomatic individuals with previously-identified precancerous lesions.

Health in Focus: The Heart and Prostate Health for our Religious Leaders

Our esteemed cardiologist, Dr. Maritoni Rapadas-Ilao, and urologist, Dr. Mikhail Gil Llanto, served as distinguished speakers at the February Clergy Assembly of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Parañaque.

Dr. Ilao shared valuable insights on how to achieve and maintain a healthy heart, highlighting the following key steps:
✅️ Balanced diet
✅️ Regular exercise
✅️ Maintaining a healthy weight
✅️ Stress management
✅️ Avoiding smoking
✅️ Limiting alcohol consumption
✅️ Regular check-ups
✅️ Staying hydrated
✅️ Getting adequate sleep
✅️ Understanding family medical history

In his presentation on prostate health, Dr. Llanto covered the anatomy and function of the prostate, along with urologic symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of common prostate conditions in men. He emphasized the vital importance of early diagnosis and intervention, particularly for prostate cancer.

Each lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A which addressed the related health concerns of the priests in attendance.

Did you know?

• Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder in humans and is the most common cause of intellectual disability.
• DS results from trisomy of chromosome 21 (47 chromosomes instead of 46), causing multiple systemic complications as part of the syndrome (physical, intellectual, mental, cardiovascular, ophthalmic, gastrointestinal and neuropsychiatric disorders).
• Some patients with DS need significant support throughout life, while others grow up to hold jobs and live on their own.

This February, we celebrate the National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month to emphasize these:
• Identify and address their developmental, physical, cardiovascular, neurological, and other medical needs promptly.
• Foster a supportive environment through positive family and community engagements.
• Provide the love and respect they truly deserve.
• Honor their rights to care, education, and training.
• Acknowledge their capability to lead fulfilling lives.

DID YOU KNOW?

Nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral diseases. The most common cases include dental caries (2 billion cases are from permanent teeth and 504 million are primary teeth caries), periodontal diseases, tooth loss, oral cancers, cleft lip and palate, gangrenous diseases of mouth and face and oro-dental traumas.

Modifiable factors that increase the occurrence of oral diseases are to***co smoking, alcohol consumption and unhealthy diet.

The cost of treatment of oral diseases may equate treatment of other non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Additionally, health insurance have limited coverage to such. Hence, the preventive approach in oral health has found much importance.

Aside from avoidance of to***co and alcohol and healthy diet, oral health starts from dental care.

Here are preventive tips from dental experts of Philippine Dental Association:
• Brush teeth twice a day (after waking up in the morning and before bedtime).
• Use toothpaste with right amount of fluoride (1,000-1,500 ppm fluoride ions)
• Use the right amount of toothpaste.
• Brush teeth for 2 minutes in circular motion.
• Spit and don't rinse after brushing.
• Use dental floss once a day.
• Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and preventive care.
• Eat nutritious food, avoid food high in sugar and drink 8-10 glasses of water per day.

30/01/2025

The Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is one of the causes of the rising respiratory tract infections, along with other viruses such as influenzae and respiratory syncytial virus.

hMPV infection generally causes mild flu-like symptoms. In other people at risk, it can worsen to signs of pneumonia, bronchitis or bronchiolitis.

Prevention of hMPV infection is similar to other infections -
• wear mask in crowded places
• wash hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
• avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth without cleaning hands first
• improve ventilation or airflow in the room by opening windows if possible
• maintain well-balanced diet, regular exercise and 8 hours of sleep a day to boost the immune system.

Be healthy and beat the virus.
