FACTS ABOUT FLOATERS AND FLASHES

Floaters are small specks, dots, circles, lines or cobwebs in your field of vision. While they seem to be in front of your eye, they are actually floating inside. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous that fills your eye. What you see are the shadows these clumps cast on your retina.

Flashes are flashing lights or lightning streaks that appear in your field of vision. Some people describe flashes as similar to seeing “stars” after being hit on the head. Flashes can appear on and off for weeks, or even months. Flashes happen when the vitreous, the gel-like fluid in the center of the eye, rubs or pulls on your retina. It is common to see flashes occasionally as people age.

HOW TO PREVENT TIRED EYES

✅ Keep the room softly lit when watching television.
✅ Rest your eyes by taking occasional breaks and looking away from the digital screen.
✅ Put a limit on your screen time.
✅ Use artificial tears.
✅ When reading printed materials or doing close work, position the light behind you and direct it onto the page or task. If reading at a desk, use a shaded light in front of you.
✅ Consult your ophthalmologist for the right glasses or contacts.

SMOKING AND YOUR EYES

Aside from causing lung disease, heart disease, cancer, and many other serious health problems, smoking can also harm your eyes. Smoking can worsen dry eye and Grave's disease; increase your risk for cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (if you are diabetic), optic nerve problems, and glaucoma; and lead to uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eyeball).
