Since it is Mother's Day today, I thought of posting this so that our sons -- Josh, Elijah and Baby #3 -- will know how God matched their mother and father. It is an incredible and supernatural story that even I find hard to believe when I listen to it. So you need to listen with a mustard seed of faith :-)

We posted this also because of the different dynamics of this interview. Ang saya. Tawa kami ng tawa. :-) WE also ended up sharing a few "secret" details that we have never really shared before. Like how I (Ardy) asked for the engagement ring back . (Balik mo muna yan until you are sure!) and why.

After Miriam and interviewed Ernie and Michelle Lopez about their love story, Ernie flipped the tables on us and started asking us about our love story.

DO NOT BE AFRAID! STAND FOR TRUTH! GOD WILL BE AT YOUR SIDE FOREVER

On MLK Day, I pay tribute to one of my heroes, the late great freedom fighter, Dr Martin Luther King. Today I freely share with you all this chapter from my latest novel, The Happy Entrepreneur.

Here's a short excerpt from that chapter (as you'll see, the book's main character, Tim, is inspired by what he read from a Martin Luther King devotional to give hope to his mentee, Eddie)

I WILL UPHOLD YOU
“The words I spoke to God that midnight are still vivid in my memory. 'I am here taking a stand for what I believe is right. But now, I am afraid. The people are looking to me for leadership, and if I stand before them without strength and courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. I have nothing left. I've come to the point where I can't face it alone.”

“So Dr. King says that after that prayer he experienced the ‘presence of the Divine’ and a voice telling him to ‘Stand up for righteousness, stand up for truth.’ And that ‘God will be at your side forever.’
Eddie was nodding his head and felt like a child being read a story by his father. “And then what happened po?” he asked.

“Well Dr. King says that a few nights later, their house was actually bombed! But even through that disaster, he was calm. Dr. King says here, ‘my experience with God had given me a new strength and trust.’ He knew that God would be able to give him the strength to face the storms of life.”

“The devotion ends with Isaiah 41:10. This is actually one of my most favorite Bible verses also.
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

In Chapter 18 you'll see Tim continuing to mentor his young mentee, Eddie (who is struggling to get back on the road to recovery after failing in business, his relationship with his gf, and his attempt to commit su***de). Watch and listen to this video to find out what happens.

It’s about the blessings of having or starting in business with nothing. Wala.

I hope this encourages those of you who are back to zero or almost zero because of the pandemic.

The big idea or lesson that I want to share with you is this:
LESS IS MORE.

Yes! LESS IS MORE.

The less money you have in starting a business, the more creative, hard working and dependent you become on God.

Let me share with you two quick stories to illustrate my thesis.

First story.

When I was 27 years old, in 1994, I ventured into business—a retail store in Limketkai Mall in CDO and later on a Gary V concert.

I lost all my money in the Concert promotion business but okay lang because that’s what God used to break me and my ego and bring me to a Bible study with my girlfriend where I heard the good news and surrendered my life to Christ.

I learned to read and apply the Bible and that turned around my life, including my finances. (The how of that later on became the content of my 2010 #1 National best-selling book, Ang Pera na Hindi Bitin. I mention that in the hope that I can hopefully sell some more copies of my book.Haha. Seriously, the girlfriend who brought me to that Bible study became my first wife. And we also became business partners. We were becoming very successful in a direct selling business and at the same time growing in our faith.

And then she became very sick with life threatening systemic lupus. She should have died that time—that was the year 2000—but God granted her a healing miracle and gave her a second life.

Our finances though were still in the ICU as the sickness and hospitalization of Tingting, sucked almost all of our savings. The miracle healing though (which became a book—The Heart of Healing—bili na kayo please) encouraged us even more in our faith to trust in the Lord with ALL of our heart and not to lean on our own understanding.

So with little money but faith in our BIG God, who proved faithful and worthy of ALL of our trust and praise—Tingting and I decided to make another GO of business. We decided to let go of our direct selling business which was stressful to her and start another business. The business we decided to get into, we realized, was right in our backyard: we had learned to promote and organize small public seminars for my dad, a professor of marketing at AIM that time, as a small side line.

Tingting and I prayed about it—we would start a new business that would organize seminars and conferences. We also prayed for a name. And the name came on a Sunday service when the pastor called the flock to be Salt and Light of the world.

There. We had a name and a tag line: Salt and Light Ventures, Inc. Bringing out the BEST in you.

I mentioned that we had little money but big dreams powered by faith in our BIG God.

We had the name registered already, we had two desks in our lanai by the garage, an old laptop connected to dial up internet and a fax machine. But still didn’t know how exactly to start the business.

I’ll pause here first for dramatic effect because this is where the important crossroad happens. This is where the story gets to an important God moment—and I don’t want you to miss it.

It’s the start of the year. New hope. New resolutions. But hopefully, you didn’t rack up new bills to pay! Let’s start the year right with the right focus.

Chapter 2: February - Your Money or Your Life?
It’s the “love month.” What do you love? Are you leading your spouse to love the things of the world? When faced with important decisions, what would you choose: your money or your life?

Chapter 3: March - Testing, testing...one, two, three!
Final exams are coming up for school children. Even though we parents are not in school anymore, many “exams” and tests in life, especially regarding money and stewardship, will come our way. The question is, will you and your spouse be ready for them?

Chapter 4: April - “GOD, please let me win the lotto!”
Usually we find ourselves at a retreat praying for our concerns. If money is tight, then we find ourselves praying more and more for provision. However, we should never pray this
prayer... “God, please let me win the lotto!”

Chapter 5: May - “I want to be a billionaire!” 67 What is your child or your children studying to become? What are your aspirations for your child or children (or even for yourselves, if you have no kids yet)?

Chapter 6: June - Pray Before You Pay!
What do you do when you get hold of a mid-year or 13th month bonus, commission check or unexpected windfall? It is hard to escape the call of the mall to spend (as opposed to saving) money. So, what should you do this month before you whip out that credit card or cash to buy something?

Chapter 7: July - Talk versus Work
Have you ever thought of starting your own business? Perhaps this is the month to start earning more income on the side.

Chapter 8: August - “This business is making me ugly!”
Have you heard of or experienced “burnout”? It can happen to any one of us spouses. Let’s now look at the importance of “balance” and rest.

Chapter 9: September - Investigate before you invest!
(If it’s too good to be true...ask your wife!)
You get a call from a “friend” who wants to share with you an opportunity to invest in a financing scheme that pays much more than what the banks pay out. What do you do?

Chapter 10: October - “Do you want to eat a snake?”
Have you been asking your Heavenly Father for what you need?

Chapter 11: November - Give Your All
Sometimes, clichés are clichés for a reason. Have you heard of this one? “You can’t outgive God.”

Chapter 12: December - The Greatest Gift
Make Christmas the time when you and your spouse can receive—and give—the greatest gift one can ever have...
