Bringing Advanced Care Closer to Home: Transforming Lives at BMC

Another inspiring success story from Bicol Medical Center!

We are thrilled to share the success of a complex reconstructive surgery performed last year. Our surgical team successfully utilized a Deltopectoral Flap to treat a patient who had been living with a parotid mass with fear of cancer for the past year. The patient is finally on the road to recovery.

We demonstrated that Bicolanos have access to complex surgical care right here in our region.

We proudly acknowledge our main surgeon, senior resident Dr. Justin M. Rebulado, guided by our Head and Neck Tumor Specialists, Dr. Archimedes Bagnes and Dr. Beatrice Guce.

Thank you to the entire OR team for restoring not just the form and function, but also the patient's confidence!

Do you have the passion to make a difference? Come join the Department of ENT-HNS! We are currently accepting new applicants for the residency program.

"Entering ENT residency has been a humbling and transformative journey. Each day presents an opportunity to care, to learn, and to grow. Challenges are inevitable, but these experiences shape resilience and character. Under the guidance of my mentors and alongside dedicated colleagues, I am learning not only how to manage disease but also how to think critically, act decisively, and serve selflessly. Each mistake becomes a lesson, and each success is a reminder of why I chose this path.

Becoming the main surgeon in various procedures, gaining medals in swimming during interhospital competitions, presenting interesting cases, and being one of the champions in the 1st Rhinology Quiz Bee during the PSO-HNS Annual Convention are important milestones in this journey.

The journey is demanding but deeply meaningful. As I move forward into my second year, I do so with gratitude, determination, and a firm commitment to becoming an ENT physician worthy of my patients’ trust.

I am ready to take on new challenges this year, 2026."

“Every achievement I made during my first year of residency was a deliberate step forward, reminding me that progress in my field is earned rather than hurried.

My case presentation during the 69th Philippine Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (PSO-HNS) Annual Convention and the surgical procedures I performed as the lead surgeon were one of these turning points.

But what I truly gained this year goes beyond numbers and podiums—it shows in tenacity and clearer judgment: Knowing when to operate, when not to, and how much is enough. I am fortunate to carry these lessons my mentors have taught me and hope to see through it throughout my training.”

"My first year of residency under the Department of ENT-HNS is coming close to its end. In my twelve months of never-ending duties, countless patients and infinite learning opportunities, my greatest achievement is not marked by a certificate, a medal or a citation, but by a quiet symbol—an asterisk. It may look insignificant, a symbol easily overlooked in a river of words. But to me, it represents one of the biggest milestones of my journey as an ENT resident: stepping up as the main surgeon.

The asterisk meant that my mentors trusted my hands. It meant hours of study, countless nights on duty, and the weight of responsibility settling firmly, yet confidently, on my shoulders. The asterisk was small, but it symbolized everything big: courage, growth, readiness, and the beginning of becoming the doctor I once aspired to be. It’s a simple character, but for me, it marks a milestone: the year I first held both the responsibility and privilege of performing surgery myself.

This year, I learned that achievements aren’t always loud. Sometimes, they’re tucked quietly beside your name, waiting for you to notice them—waiting for you to realize that you’ve become more capable than you were even a few months ago.

The asterisk marks my work, but it also marks who I am becoming. And that is my greatest achievement."

"As the year draws to an end, I reflect on my most significant accomplishment this year: the publication of my first case report, "Giant Pleomorphic Adenoma in a 64-Year-Old Woman." The process of developing my case report was transformative, promoting critical thinking and teaching me valuable lessons of rigor and discipline.

I am deeply grateful to my mentors and colleagues, whose experience and support were invaluable throughout this journey. Their belief in the significance of this case allowed it to become a tangible contribution. Furthermore, working on this case highlighted vital lessons in managing patients, enabling me to share insights that could elevate care for future patients.

This publication has ignited a deeper passion for research, serving as a benchmark for my capabilities and fueling my commitment to continuous learning. It symbolizes my professional growth and stands as a reminder that dedication can enhance our contributions to the global body of knowledge."
