Changing lives, one surgery at a time. This is why I chose to do further training in pediatric surgery after I completed my general surgery residency.

Correcting congenital anomalies like anorectal malformations (walang pwet) is high impact and life changing.

Thanks for the collaborative efforts of World Surgical Foundation Philippines,Philippine Society of Pediatrics Surgeons, Philippine Pediatric Society, Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists and the PCS SURE committee plus various LGU and industry partners for making these surgeries available to indigent children.

Sharing the post of Dr Dennis Sacdalan. These are evidence-based recommendations for all, specially those fighting cancer.

Some personal insights from the recent ESPEN congress:
1. Benefits of higher protein intake (1.5-2.0g per kg) by patients with cancer include increased protein mass and longer survival.
2. It’s not just the amount of proteins that matter. The quality of proteins and the amount of physical activity are also important in improving survival.
3. Mixed sources of proteins are beneficial. Not all animal sources of proteins are bad. Dairy products do not increase the risk of cancer. Not all plant sources of proteins are good. Potatoes have the lowest quality of plant proteins.
4. Limiting animal proteins is good for cancer prevention. But once a patient is diagnosed with cancer, increasing dietary protein intake improves clinical outcomes for cancer patients (survival and quality of life).
5. The Mediterranean diet and lifestyle (including more physical activity, quality sleeping time, less stress) have many benefits in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
