Anna Gallo was on the final day of a dream skiing holiday to when she started violently shaking, vomiting and losing consciousness.

She was put into an ambulance and rushed from hotel to hospital where she was diagnosed with bacterial and septic shock.

Doctors at 's National Center for Global Health and Medicine diagnosed Anna with , which had rapidly escalated into meningitis and septic shock.

She fell into a three-day coma, her life suspended by machines and intravenous antibiotics.

She remembers nothing of those lost days, but they are chiselled into her mother's memory.

She still cannot walk due to necrotic lesions β€” patches of dead or dying tissue β€” on her feet and legs. Painful reminders of how close the bacteria came to winning.

There is one detail she keeps coming back to.

"I was vaccinated for back in school, but not for type B, which is the kind I got," she says.

has had a free, state-funded immunisation program for meningococcal C since 2003 β€” upgraded to a "four-in-one" vaccine that covers the A, C, W and Y strains in 2017.

But free type B vaccinations β€” using the drug Bexsero β€” only started rolling out in March 2024.

is the only other state with a similar program.

Mater Health Services director of infectious diseases Paul Griffin says Anna's story is a reminder of why Australia needs a consistent national immunisation program.

"Because it's relatively rare, people perceive the risk as low," he says.

"But the consequences can be devastating."

Believe in what your body can do 🩷πŸ’ͺ

Scientists have discovered breastmilk isn’t just food. It’s alive.

It contains living cells, stem cells and tiny exosomes carrying messages that support healing, development and immunity. It helps regulate the immune system, reduce inflammation and protect against infection. In labs, breastmilk can even inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria.

Your body creates something no lab has ever fully replicated a fluid that shifts and adapts to your child’s needs in real time. Formula feeds babies, but breastmilk communicates with them. It responds. It protects. It evolves.

Not just nourishment.
But living, biologically intelligent care made with love and biology intertwined.

Share this if you’ve ever been in awe of what your body can do. You’re allowed to be proud πŸ–€
