According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if you are bitten by an animal, it is important to take immediate action to prevent the risk of rabies. Here's what you should do:
1. Clean the wound immediately: Wash the bite or scratch thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. This helps reduce the risk of infection.
2. Disinfect the wound: Use an antiseptic solution to disinfect the area after cleaning.
3. Seek medical attention immediately: Visit a healthcare provider or hospital as soon as possible. You may need to receive a rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccination.
4. Identify the animal: If possible, identify the animal involved in the bite. If the animal is available and behaves unusually, it may need to be observed for signs of rabies.
5. Follow your doctorโ€™s advice: Based on the type of animal and the severity of the bite, your healthcare provider will decide the best course of action, which may include rabies vaccinations.
Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, so timely intervention is crucial.
