Why is SAINT LUCY holding eyes? 👁👁
Feast Day: December 13
1. Who is St. Lucy?
St. Lucy (Santa Lucia) is a Christian virgin and martyr who lived in the 4th century in Syracuse, Sicily. Her name comes from the Latin word lux, meaning light.
2. Why is St. Lucy important in the Church?
St. Lucy is honored for her pure faith, courage, and total love for Christ, even to the point of giving her life. She is one of the early martyrs of the Church and is mentioned in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I).
3. What does it mean that she was a virgin?
St. Lucy consecrated her life and body entirely to God. She chose Christ as her only Bridegroom and refused to marry, even when pressured by society and her family.
4. Why was she persecuted?
St. Lucy was killed because she refused to renounce her Christian faith and refused to marry a pagan man. She had already consecrated her life to Jesus Christ and chose Him as her only Bridegroom.
During the Roman persecutions, Christians were ordered to worship the Roman gods and deny Christ. Lucy remained firm and declared that Christ alone was her Lord. Because of this, she was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death.
5. How did St. Lucy die?
St. Lucy was martyred around the year 304 A.D. According to ancient Christian tradition, St. Lucy was subjected to cruel tortures because she refused to deny her faith in Jesus Christ.
When her persecutors tried to force her into a house of prostitution as punishment for her Christianity, she could not be moved, no matter how many men or even oxen tried to drag her—showing God’s protection and her spiritual strength.
She was then burned, but the fire did not harm her.
Finally, St. Lucy was killed by the sword, which ended her earthly life and crowned her martyrdom.
6. Why is St. Lucy holding eyes?
▪︎ Her name means “light.”
The name Lucy comes from the Latin lux, meaning light. Light allows us to see, so the eyes symbolize vision—both physical and spiritual.
▪︎ She is the patron saint of the blind and those with eye problems.
Over time, the Church began invoking St. Lucy for people suffering from eye illnesses and blindness. The eyes in her statue remind us of her intercession for healing of sight.
▪︎ Symbol of spiritual vision.
The eyes also represent seeing with faith—the ability to recognize Christ as the true Light even in times of darkness, suffering, or persecution.
7. What virtues does St. Lucy teach us?
Faithfulness to Christ
Purity of heart
Courage in suffering
Trust in God even in darkness
8. What is the message of St. Lucy for us today?
St. Lucy reminds us that Christ is our true Light, and no darkness—fear, suffering, or persecution—can overcome those who remain faithful to Him.
-----------
LET US ASK FOR HER INTERCESSION:
St. Lucy, virgin and martyr,
you remained faithful to Christ, the true Light.
Help us to see with eyes of faith
and to walk courageously in God’s ways.
Pray for us. Amen.
