The American Optometric Association recommends that babies have their first comprehensive eye exam at around 6 months old, regardless of whether they show any signs of eye problems. This early exam is crucial for detecting potential issues that could affect their vision development.

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵. If any issues are found, the doctor can provide guidance on treatment options. Additionally, even if no problems are detected, the next eye exam is usually recommended around age 3 and then before starting school.

It's also important to note that some babies may need an earlier exam if they have certain risk factors, such as:

- *Premature Birth* or low birth weight
- *Family History* of visual problems
- *Crossed Eyes* or other eye conditions

This month, we celebrated the August Sight Saving Month by conducting FREE SCHOOL VISION SCREENING at Ormoc Adventist Elementary School Incorporated and St. Therese Day Care Center Stdcai Early Learners, Albuera Leyte. We are truly thankful for this great and timely opportunity to screen these early learners and grade school students.

We included testing of visual acuity, color vision, and stereopsis. We also used our efficient SPOT VISION SCREENER that can automatically detect amblyogenic factors like errors of refraction such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, and strabismus or eye misalignment, and unequal pupil sizes.

During the screening, results will indicate Pass or Fail response. Those who were untestable or have failed the screening are recommended for comprehensive eye examination. Some cases were also recommended for rescreening.

The purpose of vision screening is to identify vision problems in a treatable stage, provide education, and provide a referral for a comprehensive eye exam by licensed eye doctors. Through vision screening, we are setting students up for success in their educational journey!

Disclaimer: Vision screening is not a diagnostic process and does not replace a comprehensive examination by an eye doctor; but it is an appropriate and essential element of a strong public health approach to vision care. The purpose of vision screening is to increase the number of individuals in need of care who ultimately receive comprehensive eye exams and necessary treatment.
