Acne can present in different forms. Sometimes one type may predominate, but most of the time, acne patients present with a mix of the following acne lesions.

The medical term for the liittle bumps with closed pores (commonly called whiteheads) is “closed comedones”, while those with wider open pores (“blackheads” due to the visible oxidized material in the clogged pore) are “open comedones”.

The visibly inflamed (red tender bumps) lesions are called papules, while those that have pus are termed pustules.

“Nodules” are the more inflamed lesions that cause larger, more painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin, while the even bigger, deeper, more painful, usually pus-filled lumps are called “cysts” or “cystic acne”.
