Combatting Stunting and Malnutrition Through the Tutok Kainan Program
To address malnutrition—particularly stunting among children aged 6–23 months and nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women—the National Nutrition Council (NNC) leads the Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program (TKDSP).
Anchored in Republic Act 11148 (Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act), this initiative integrates the First 1,000 Days (F1KD) strategy with essential Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) interventions, ensuring proper growth during this critical period of life.
According to the 2023 National Nutrition Survey, 2 out of 10 children under five (23.6%) are stunted, while 19.1% of pregnant women are nutritionally at-risk of delivering low-birth-weight infants-underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions.
The Tutok Kainan Program provides supplemental wet and dry feeding for 180 feeding days for children aged 6-23 months old and 90 feeding days for pregnant women. In addition to these nutrition interventions, the program incorporates other key components, including home food production, micronutrient supplementation, and integrated management of childhood illness, with support from counterpart funding by the local government units (LGUs).
Through, multisectoral collaboration, Tutok Kainan aims to reduce and ultimately eliminate malnutrition. By prioritizing quality, quantity and consistency, the program seeks to significantly improve the nutritional status of the country’s most vulnerable groups, giving children and mothers a stronger start toward a healthier life.
