Let's talk about the gut-immune axis ๐Ÿ’ฌ
The immune system is the bodyโ€™s natural defence mechanism. It is a complex network of organs, cells and proteins that defends the body against infections and viruses, whilst protecting the body's own cells. Did you know that our gut health and immune health are closely linked, meaning an imbalance in one can affect the other?
As we enter cold and flu season, get yourself clued up on this connection between the gut microbiome and immunity (known as the gut-immune axis) via the Yakult Science for Health resource.

This handy guide covers:
- Gut-immune axis
- Communication pathways
- Gut-immune axis throughout life

Asian Lifestyle Medicine Council

WELCOME TO THE ALMC! We are Asiaโ€™s medical professional society dedicated to identifying and eradicating the cause of disease as opposed to treating just the symptoms. Lifestyle Medicine is revolutionizing our healthcare system. Reversing Disease Lifestyle Medicine involves the therapeutic use of lifestyle, such as a predominately whole food, plant-based diet, exercise, stress management, to***co and alcohol cessation, and other non-drug modalities, to prevent, treat, and, more importantly, reverse lifestyle related, chronic diseases that are all too prevalent. Clinical research overwhelmingly provides evidential basis for the preferential use of lifestyle interventions as first-line therapy. This research moves lifestyle from prevention only to include efficacious treatment from an intervention used to prevent disease to an intervention used to treat and even reverse disease. This represents a fundamental change in the way the medical establishment views โ€˜lifestyle medicine,โ€™ although, despite the substantial, voluminous evidence, itโ€™s a view that has not yet been universally adopted. TREATING THE CAUSE Changing the Face of Medical Practice The Asian Lifestyle Medicine Council (ALMC) is the umbrella organization for professional medical organizations representing the different countries in Asia, all dedicated in advancing the mission and practice of Lifestyle Medicine throughout the world. Science Supports the Efficacy of Lifestyle Medicine A seismic shift is taking place in healthcare, as the system moves from the unsustainable fee-for-service model of delivery to a value and outcomes-based system of care. With 80% or more of healthcare spending tied directly to the treatment of conditions rooted in poor lifestyle choices, itโ€™s evident that a focus on the clinical practice of Lifestyle Medicine (LM) is essential.Lifestyle Medicine clinicians emphasize the use of lifestyle intervention in the treatment of disease. While the practice of Lifestyle Medicine (LM) incorporates many public health principles and approaches, it remains primarily a clinical discipline. Preventive services are generally not recommended or adopted unless they are cost-effective in the population in which they are to be implemented. Since preventive services accrue their benefit primarily by reducing costs from morbidity and mortality, this cost-effectiveness criteria is reasonable.Treatment services, on the other hand, are recommended and adopted when there is an evidence-based medical indication for treatment. The presence of morbidity constitutes a sufficient medical indication for applying an intervention proven to improve, reverse or ameliorate the disease or its symptoms. Costs play a very different role in determining treatment services as opposed to preventive services. This difference is poorly understood as it pertains to the practice of clinical LM, and the confusion is inappropriately limiting the application of proven lifestyle interventions in the treatment of patients with existing disease. EDUCATION IS THE KEY Science overwhelmingly supports the efficacy of Lifestyle Medicine: Hereโ€™s your opportunity to learn and transform your life and your medical practice. โ€œLifestyle Medicine is both the newest thing in medicine โ€” and perhaps the oldest. There was a time before โ€˜medicineโ€™ when lifestyle was it. Hippocrates advised: let food be thy medicine. We have found our way back to the future, and with good reason.โ€ - David Katz, MD, MPH, President, American College of Lifestyle Medicine DISTINGUISH YOURSELF ... ... as Board Certified in Lifestyle Medicine Official Designation for IBLM Diplomate Status Physicians & professionals awarded board certification through IBLM are required to use the following official language when designating their status as a Diplomate: โ€œDiplomate of the International Board of Lifestyle Medicineโ€ or โ€œDipIBLM.โ€ Highlight Your Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine Earning certification from the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine represents a significant professional achievement and a commendable dedication to patients and their families through your commitment to the prevention โ€“ and treatment โ€“ of Lifestyle and chronic disease disorders. Youโ€™ve worked hard to earn board certification in lifestyle medicine. You should proudly โ€œDistinguish Yourselfโ€ as a Diplomate of the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine when.
