THE SCIENCE OF ASANAS
THE ART OF TEACHING
WORKING WITH SUBTLE ENERGY
THE ESSENCE OF YOGA
01 THE SCIENCE OF ASANAS
REGULAR ASANA SESSIONS
There will be regulated time for different class types on a daily basis. You will experience various classes from the trainors as well as guest instructors. You will observe and assist the instructors on a rotation basis. As you observe their styles and techniques, you too will discover for yourself your own as you complete the course and start teaching classes yourself.
YOGA ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
You will learn all about the anatomical systems and understand how they function in coordination with each other, how they affect your breathing, your movement, your asana practice. Biomechanics and kinesiology of movement will make understanding how the body operates so much easier and how it translates to your asanas, in your transitions, holds and progression.
ASANA TECHNIQUES
It is crucial as a teacher to know how poses are ideally performed and taught systematically and safely beginning from preparation to holding the pose all the way to counterposes. You will learn the benefits, variations and modifications, how to adjust and how to integrate props in the practice. The course will cover standing poses, backbends, inversions, sun salutations, twists, arm balances, hip openers, seated poses, core support, and pranayama techniques.
SAFETY AND ALIGNMENT
At Sodhana Yoga we place emphasis on ideal alignment and how to safely teach and perform the poses for different scenarios and student levels. Focusing on functional alignment coupled with a good understanding on yoga anatomy will make the class not just efficient and safe but fun and rewarding as well in addition to preventing injuries.
WORKING WITH INJURIES AND MEDICAL CONDITIONS
There are students who require special consideration as you teach the classes whether they be simple muscle aches or structural conditions or other limiting medical conditions. You will be equipped with the knowledge to guide them through their practice without aggravating their situation but to gradually help improve or manage their condition for the long term.
02 THE ART OF TEACHING
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
Know what to teach and how to teach effectively and efficiently centered on safety and alignment. Everyone is different. Therefore, as a teacher you will learn how to adjust your class and direct your attention to various situations, knowing when to give an instruction as well as not giving too much. You will be able to assess what is and is not suitable for a student and how they can learn better.
CLASS SEQUENCING AND PLANNING
The asanas, or poses, are best sequenced in a way that they lead to a desired goal or result. You will learn how to plan your own classes with different class themes from gentle flows to restorative sequences, stretching and strengthening, grounding sessions. You will be able to formulate classes benefitting the endocrine and immune systems or create powerful flows to improve strength and stamina as well as improve breathing capacity with pranayama breath flows to name a few. Traditional hatha yoga is the foundation for a good asana practice.
OBSERVING, DEMONSTRATING, CUEING, ADJUSTING AND ASSISTING
To be a good teacher means being intuitive, being observant. Instead of trying to strictly stick to your prepared class plan, it is much better to be able to adjust according to your students. The skill of observation allows you to change gears as needed and know what, how and when to adjust and correct something in your students.
ETHICS
Being a yoga teacher means being a role model, a mentor, a guide for others. As a beacon, it is our responsibility to strive for setting the best possible example, continuously learning and improving beyond the training course. Yoga is a never ending learning process. Strive for perfection no matter how slow it takes. To set the path, you will learn practical guidelines on how to lead an exemplary lifestyle as a yoga and meditation teacher. This module will include how to practice what you are teaching, how to relate with your students, how to conduct yourself instilling confidence in them.
ASSISTING AND OBSERVING IN A CLASS
Learn how to be an efficient and appropriate assistant and observe other teachers’ signature styles and techniques. Learning from experienced instructors is one of the quickest ways to make progress.
PRACTICAL TEACHING EXPERIENCE
You will first learn how to teach with a training partner and then have the opportunity to lead a proper class following a set sequence. You will also be able to teach your own class plans later on. After each session you will receive detailed feedback from the trainors. Throughout the duration of the course you will get to apply the techniques that you have learnt in the practical sessions and gain the experience as well as confidence to teach.
03 WORKING WITH SUBTLE ENERGY
NADIS, CHAKRAS, BANDHAS AND PRANA
Learn to cultivate, be aware of and practice activating the subtle energy, understanding the relationship between them, the pranayama and the bandhas or energy locks.
PRANAYAMA BREATHING TECHNIQUES
You will learn how important breathing is in order to achieve a balanced and effective asana practice. Learn how to integrate the different pranayama or breathing techniques, knowing their purpose, recommended time of practice, how to perform, modify and teach to suit the given class situation. These include: complete yoga breathing, ujjayi pranayama, kapalabhati, bastrika, sitali, viloma, kumbhaka, nadi sodhana...
04 THE ESSENCE OF YOGA | YOGA WISDOM
THE SCIENCE OF IDENTITY
Yoga is not just a form of exercise, it is an enlightening path that helps one successfully travel the path of life itself. The first step in one’s yoga wisdom journey is to understand the yoga view of the self, to understand our essence and thus answer the question “Who am I?”.
Knowing one’s true self is a science; it is factual, easy to comprehend, and life changing. Discovering who you are is the real beginning of your yoga journey.
YOGA SCRIPTURE AND PHILOSOPHY
Know your heritage from the ancient texts and discover how to apply the learnings to our modern world. Yoga scripture is timeless; it is everyone’s birthright. The philosophy that you will learn in this course are taken from celebrated vedic scriptures such as the Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Caitanya Caritamrta and the Sri Isopanisad. They are presented with bonafide commentaries from the great sages and saintly teachers.
MEDITATION TECHNIQUES
Everyone seeks happiness. It is our intrinsic quality to be happy, to be blissful that is why we endlessly hanker for it. However, no matter what we do, we seem never to be satisfied, unable to give up our destructive ways,
and attain lasting peace and satisfaction. Here you discover and experience for yourselves different meditation techniques to start on your own path to happiness. The practice and understanding of yoga meditation is a trong component of this course with participants learning how to meditate and incorporate it into a class situation.
KIRTAN AND MANTRA MEDITATION
Kirtan, the singing or chanting of sacred mantras, or transcendental sound, is an easy yet sublime method of yoga meditation that has been practiced since time immemorial. It is highly transformative and is the recommended process for self-realization in todays modern age of chaos quarrel and confusion. It has the gradual effect of cleansing your heart and mind, helping you to awaken and cultivate your inherent wisdom and spiritual love.
Kirtan and Mantra Meditation is essensial in helping you to understand the subject matters in the philosophy module. There will be group sessions every training day throughout the duration of the course.
DEMYSTIFYING THE DIVINE
When we speak of the Divine or the Supreme Being or God, we are not speaking of a Hindu god or a Christian god or a Buddhist god or a Moslem god. We are also not speaking of a mysterious and incomprehensible energy or a collection of laws and definitions. When we speak of God, we are speaking of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Cause of all causes, the Original Person. You can come to know Him by His words
in scriptures. The purifing process of kirtan and meditation is essential to bring us to the state of understanding God for who He is. What seems to be complicated and unexplainable suddenly becomes readily understandable. The hard-to-explain has often been dismissed as mysterious and incomprehensible but with genuine, bonafide guidance then the mystery is not so mysterious anymore. It becomes refreshing, enlightening, and peaceful.
