According to the World Health Organization (WHO), all forms of to***co use are harmful, and there is no safe level of exposure to to***co. Cigarette smoking is the most prevalent form of to***co use globally. To***co is responsible for the deaths of over 7 million people annually, including an estimated 1.6 million non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Approximately 80% of the world’s 1.3 billion to***co users reside in low- and middle-income countries, where the burden of to***co-related illnesses and fatalities is most severe. The ni****ne in to***co is highly addictive, triggering the release of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with a ‘feel-good’ sensation, although this effect is short-lived.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), co***ne is an addictive stimulant drug that is made from the leaves of coca plant. Drugs like co***ne powerfully activate reward and reinforcement mechanisms in the brain. Reward refers to the euphoria or high produced when taking the drug (equivalent to “liking”); reinforcement refers to the desire to take the drug again (“wanting”). Effects of co***ne include, chest pain, Myocardial Infarction, Arrhythmia, and chest pains.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol contains ethanol, known as a psychoactive and toxic substance with dependence-producing properties wherein the individual's body or mind becomes reliant to the substance for normal functioning. Drinking alcohol can cause both short-term and long-term effects, such as lowered inhibitions and including a weakened immune system. This may lead to the risks of developing noncommunicable diseases such as liver diseases, heart diseases, and different types of cancers, including mental health and behavioral conditions such as depression, anxiety, and alcohol use disorders.

𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀, also known as intermittent smokers, are individuals who smoke no more than a couple of ci******es a day. Unlike regular smokers, chippers do not develop a strong dependence on ni****ne, and many can go days without smoking without experiencing withdrawal symptoms. They often smoke in social settings or on occasion rather than out of habit.

𝗖𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 is a primary metabolite of ni****ne and is commonly used as a biomarker to measure to***co exposure in both smokers and non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke. It has a longer half-life than ni****ne, making it more reliable for detecting recent to***co use through blood, urine, or saliva tests. Due to its stability in the body, cotinine is widely used in research and clinical settings to assess smoking habits and the effectiveness of smoking cessation programs.

𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘀 refer to synthetic cathinones, a group of lab-made stimulant drugs chemically similar to the natural compound found in the khat plant. These drugs are often sold as a white or brown crystalline powder and labeled as "not for human consumption" to avoid regulation. Bath salts can cause severe paranoia, hallucinations, violent behavior, and even fatal overdoses. They are known to increase heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature, sometimes leading to life-threatening conditions like excited delirium (Prosser & Nelson, 2012).

𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗜 or e-cigarette or va**ng product use-associated lung injury is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-ci******es and va**ng products. Va**ng involves using an e-cigarette to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a v***r that can be inhaled. Most v**e liquids contain substances such as propylene glycol and glycerol as base ingredients that create the v***r. But they may also contain other compounds including artificial flavors, ni****ne, THC, and cannabinoid (CBD) oil.
