What and how should people with diabetes eat?
The most basic thing in the diet that people with diabetes need to know is: How many times per day should you eat? And how should you eat each time?
First, you should only eat 3 times a day. Breaking into many small meals throughout the day is a very common misconception. Eating at three consistent times of the day helps you better use the insulin your body produces or is provided through medication.
The second most important thing is what type of meal is suitable for people with diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association developed an easy-to-follow method for creating a simple meal - the Plate Method. So how is the plate method done?
🌤Breakfast: You can eat according to the diet of a normal person in Vietnam. For example: vermicelli, pho, fried bread... It's best to eat homemade food.
⛅️Lunch - dinner: Prepare yourself a plate with a diameter of about 22 cm (a common type of food plate at home or in restaurants). Divide the plate into 3 parts and proceed to put food into each part as follows:
Step 1: Put non-starchy vegetables in 1/2 of the plate.
Most vegetables are low in carbohydrates so they don't add much sugar. Vegetables are not limited for diabetics, so you should increase this food group.
However, it should be noted that there are a few tubers that are not in this low-starch group. For example: sweet potatoes, potatoes, yams... these foods will greatly increase blood sugar.
Step 2: Fill 1/4 of the plate with lean meat, fish or vegetable protein.
Step 3: The starchy food group is divided into the remaining 1/4 of the plate.
This is the food group that increases blood sugar the most, and is the food group that diabetics need to limit.
Finally, about drinks: Choose filtered water or low-calorie drinks.
The above eating method can be applied effectively and conveniently for people with diabetes who are doing moderate-intensity labor and those doing office work.
