What Causes COPD?
While each individual case of COPD can differ, there’s one common cause behind most cases of this lung disease: to***co smoking.
According to the American Lung Association, 90 percent of all COPD cases are caused by cigarette smoking. The other 10 percent can be attributed to other irritants you may breathe in, such as the smoke created by burning fuel or heating in poorly ventilated areas, air pollution, dust, and fumes.
If you’re wondering whether you’re at risk of developing COPD, there are a few factors that can increase your odds. These include:
Exposure to to***co smoke (including smoke from pipes, ci**rs, and ma*****na).
Smokers who have asthma.
Exposure to dusts and chemicals in your line of work.
Long-term exposure to chemical fumes, vapors, and dusts.
Exposure to fumes from burning fuel, particularly in poorly ventilated areas.
Being 40 years old or older.
Genetics, specifically a family history of the genetic disorder alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.

Stages of COPD
COPD is generally classified into four stages, ranging from mild to very severe, based on the degree of lung function impairment. This classification helps guide treatment plans and predict disease progression. Understanding the stage of COPD is essential for determining the most effective treatment approach.
Mild (Stage 1) – Often marked by a chronic cough with mucus. Lung function is mildly affected, though many may not notice symptoms at this stage.
Moderate (Stage 2) – Symptoms become more noticeable, such as increased breathlessness and more frequent respiratory infections. Many people seek medical help during this stage.
Severe (Stage 3) – Symptoms worsen, and flare-ups become more common, significantly impacting daily activities and quality of life. Lung function is considerably reduced.
Very Severe (Stage 4) – Also known as end-stage COPD, where lung function is critically impaired, and symptoms are persistent and severe. Oxygen therapy may be necessary, and quality of life is often severely affected.

Think it’s just a cough? Think again. Cases of whooping cough (pertussis) are on the rise in Australia, with an estimated 45,000 cases expected by the end of the year. 😞
Whooping cough is a bacterial lung infection that can affect people of all ages—but it can be especially serious for babies under six months.
Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the spread of whooping cough. If you’re pregnant, you should get vaccinated between 20 and 32 weeks to protect your newborn baby.
While whooping cough may start with mild cold-like symptoms, it quickly becomes more severe, leading to intense coughing fits that can be dangerous, especially for infants and those with weakened immune systems.
Anyone with whooping cough should stay away from daycare, school or work until no longer infectious (3 weeks after the cough starts, or until you have had 5 days of antibiotics). They should also avoid contact with anyone at higher risk of severe illness, such as very young children and pregnant people. 😷

Originating from India and Africa, Moringa (also known locally as Malunggay) is a perennial tropical deciduous tree that can live for up to 20 years. The bark of the moringa tree is softwood, and at the top of each branch, the leaves are arranged in two to three rows of pinnate compound leaves. Moringa pods are long and slender, ranging from 20 to 60 centimeters in length.
The young leaves of the moringa tree grow rapidly, with a harvest cycle of about 2-3 weeks; older leaves can be dried and processed into powder as a food additive. Moringa pods contain about 12 to 35 seeds, and each tree can produce between 10,000 to 30,000 seeds annually. The seeds are enclosed in a gray-brown triangular-shaped fruit, and mature moringa seeds contain approximately 30-40% oil, which can be extracted for use as oil.
