PSEM Celebrating 50 years of Excellence in Philippine Endocrinology (1962-2012): Filipino Endocrinologists Serving Filipino Patients

The Philippine Society of Endocrinology & Metabolism (PSEM) was founded in 1962 when a group of physicians and scientists with a special interest in endocrinology from the University of the Philippines, University of Sto. Tomas, University of the East, Far Eastern University and Manila Central University, banded together to facilitate the exchange of new knowledge in the field, encourage mutual help in the study of specific problems, and promote the advancement of endocrinology as a distinct specialty in the Philippines. PSEM remains the one and only certifying body in the Philippines for the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism- as a specialty component society of the Philippine Medical Association, a component society of the Philippine College of Physicians, a founding member of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies, and a member of the International Society of Endocrinology.

DAPAT KA BANG MAGPA-TEST SA DIABETES?

Dahil bagong pasok ang taon, dapat ring pag-isipan ang ating kalusugan. Sino sino ang dapat magpa-test para sa diabetes?

Ayon sa Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, ang mga sumusunod ang dapat magpa-check ng dugo para sa diabetes.

1. Lahat ng Pilipino edad 40 pataas

2. Puwedeng magpa-test ang mas bata sa 40 anyos kung -

a. dating may impaired fasting glucose o impaired glucose tolerance (borderline na resulta sa blood sugar test; hindi normal pero hindi sobrang taas para tawaging diabetes)

b. dating nagkaroon ng gestational diabetes o diabetes ng pagbubuntis o nanganak ng sanggol na ang timbang ay 8 pounds or higit pa

c. may polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS)

d. overweight o obese (sobra ang timbang)

e. waist circumference >90 cm sa lalaki at >80 cm sa babae

f. First-degree relative na may diabetes (halimbawa ay kapatid o magulang)

g. Sedentary lifestyle o yung hindi gaanong aktibo ang pagkilos (lagi lamang nakaupo o nakahiga)

h. Altapresyon BP >140/90 mm Hg

i. Mga sakit sa ugat tulad ng stroke, heart attack o peripheral arterial disease (mga baradong ugat dahil sa mataas na kolesterol)

j. Acanthosis nigricans (pag-itim ng batok at mga siko na senyales ng insulin resistance)

k. Schizophrenia (sakit sa pag-iisip)

l. HDL 250 mg/dL (bahagi po ito ng cholesterol profile)

Pagkatapos makuha ang resulta ng inyong blood test (fasting blood sugar o oral glucose tolerance test o HbA1c), dalhin ito sa doktor para mapag-usapan ninyo kung ito ba ay normal, kailangan na ulitin o sundan ng iba pang testing.
