The thematic session on Promoting Lead Paint Bans in the SEA Region at the IPEN Southeast and East Asia Regional Meeting in Palawan, Philippines, focused on advancing lead-safe policies through shared regional experiences and strategies.

The session, moderated by Dr. Geminn Louis Apostol (Ateneo Center for Research and Innovation), featured an overview of IPEN’s campaign by Jeiel Guarino (IPEN: for a toxics-free future) and panel insights from Nexus3 Foundation, Ecowaste Coalition, and Consumers Association Penang - CAP. It highlighted varying levels of progress in national lead paint regulations across the region.

Panelists emphasized effective strategies such as engaging governments and industry, using evidence-based advocacy, and strengthening public communication on health risks. Key challenges included weak enforcement, industry resistance, and limited awareness, while opportunities lie in stronger policy implementation and regional collaboration. The session underscored the need for sustained partnerships and public education to accelerate the phase-out of lead in paints.

One week after the Navotas Landfill fire was declared "under control," new data shows that the air quality crisis is far from over. While the flames have subsided, a regional "spike" in pollution is now affecting the entirety of Metro Manila, extending as far as Bulacan and Bataan.

Standard sensors primarily track visible dust and particles (PM2.5). However, landfill fires release invisible, toxic gases—such as carbon monoxide, VOCs, and potentially dioxins and furans—that standard monitors often miss. Even if the air looks clear or your app shows a "Moderate" rating, the chemical risk may still be high.

How to stay safe:
✅ Monitor Symptoms: Watch for eye/throat irritation, coughing, or dizziness.
✅ Mask Up: Use an N95 or equivalent respirator; surgical masks do not filter out toxic chemical byproducts.
✅ Limit Exposure: Keep windows sealed and avoid outdoor activities during peak haze hours.

The air we breathe is a public health crisis.

At the launch of the Liveable Cities Co+Lab, ACRI’s Dr. Annelle Chua delivered a wake-up call: most Filipinos breathe air with pollution levels 4x higher than WHO safety limits—fueling a ₱1.4 trillion health economic burden.

We can’t manage what we can’t measure. So, through the Breathe Metro Manila initiative, ACRI is working with the Manila Observatory, Ateneo BUILD, and Clarity to eliminate the Metro’s "blind spots" using Clarity Node-S sensors and AI-driven analytics.
