The way that “self care” has become advertised and promoted within the wellness community has a TON of privilege associated with it.⠀

This is why we really don’t use the words “self care”, we used the phrase “nervous system regulation”. Too often, self care feels unattainable by those who are struggling to you know, pay their bills or stay alive? During this pandemic. People begin to see themselves as not being able to access rest or rejuvenation because they can’t afford to travel or go to the spa or other glamorous “self care”.

Try to list 5 things that you're thankful for to keep you looking forward during this challenging time.This is “self care” because it is caring for our nervous systems. It is also important to note that what helps us regulate sometimes, may not work for us in other situations. This is why having many tools in the toolbox for our system regulation is so important.⠀

You are worth care and regulation, even if you are not showered with privilege.⠀

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs describes five essential human needs that impact our ability to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.

They are listed as

-Physiological needs(food, water, housing, sleep, clothing)
-Safety and Security (health, employment, property, family, social stability)
-Love and Belonging (friendship, intimacy, family/ chosen family, sense of connection)
-Self-Esteem (confidence, achievement, respect of others, a sense of self)
-Self-Actualization(morality, creativity, acceptance, purpose).⠀

The main concept of this theory is that if the core human needs (the bottom of the triangle) are not met, the needs above will be difficult to achieve, meet or obtain.⠀

This theory can be helpful when working with survivors who may feel stuck in their healing or when working with addictions.⠀

If you come from a childhood where control was used excessively, (examples include but are not limited to);⠀
• Your belongings were controlled and used as a way to shame you (eg. Clothing being taken away and needing to ask for your clothing).⠀
• You were not allowed to interact with friends or family.⠀
• You were not allowed to go to school.⠀
• Your individuality was punished and controlled.⠀
• Decisions were made for you well beyond childhood.⠀
• You were forced to apologize.⠀
• You were forced to do things that went against your own values and beliefs.⠀
• Any other form of being controlled by a caregiver which led to trauma.⠀

This Covid-19 isolation will be even more triggering for your mental health. A month in, many of us are starting to struggle with feeling suffocated, stuck and confined. This is because isolation goes against our biological survival instincts.⠀

For trauma survivors who were abused and controlled as children, the rules and confinement practices of Covid-19 can activate feelings of anger, skin crawling anxiety and feelings of needing to run away.⠀

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns for children and adolescents, affecting approximately 20% of children, 1 in 5 parents will have a child who struggles with anxiety. ⠀

Feelings of anxiety are normal during times of change, and starting school or transitioning back to school is a common trigger for anxiety in children. You might start to notice your child complaining of stomach/headaches or other physical health symptoms, crying before school, asking to stay home from school, experiencing increased irritability, seeking constant reassurance from you, and/or having difficulty going to or staying asleep at night – these are all signs of school-related anxiety in children. As a parent, it can be challenging to know how to support your child when they begin showing symptoms of school-related anxiety Here are a few tips and strategies to help make this year’s back-to-school transition easier for you and your child:⠀

-Shift their focus
-Respect and talk about your child’s feelings⠀
-Problem Solve
-Teach them ways to calm themselves down
-Help them develop a soothing bedtime ritual
-Help them develop a soothing bedtime ritual
-Stick to a school-day routine
-Talk to their teacher

Experiment with these strategies. Every child will be different, and strategies that help ease anxiety for one child, may not be helpful for another. Remember, learning to man
