The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 5,000 new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the country from July to September, Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said on Saturday.

“Thirty percent of the new cases are below the age of 18. They are young. So ’yan, diyan ako naaalarma kasi for life na ’yung treatment (That is why I am alarmed, because the treatment is for life)," he said.

Earlier, the DOH called for the declaration of a national public health emergency after noting a 500% increase in HIV cases among young Filipinos.

They called it the iron lung.
But it was really an iron prayer.

In 1950, children lay inside these metal chambers when polio stole their breath — machines expanding and contracting their lungs so life could continue a little longer.
Each hum of the motor meant another inhale. Another chance.

Polio was the shadow every parent feared. It struck without warning, leaving thousands paralyzed each year. Some children lived inside these cylinders for months, others for life — able to move only their heads while nurses became their hands.

Then came a vaccine. Jonas Salk’s discovery in the 1950s turned fear into history, collapsing a global epidemic within a generation.
A simple shot replaced a room full of machines.

This image isn’t just about disease. It’s about distance — how far science has carried us from the sound of those slow, mechanical breaths.
