Acute Otitis Media in Children

> Middle ear infection with symptoms of ear pain and ear discharge and may be associated with symptoms of fever, cough and colds.
> Common among children < 3 yrs of age.

Risk factors: Exposure to smoke, Poor economic status, Premature birth, Allergies and immunological deficiency, Cleft palate and craniofacial abnormalities, Environmental factors.

Unfortunately our children especially the infants cannot verbalize symptoms unlike adults and when you notice your child is irritable, febrile, maybe with cough and colds may or may not be with visible ear discharges. Monitor your young ones as these could be signs of an ear infection.

If left untreated Acute Otitis Media could lead to more serious complications.

Please see a primary care physician, a pediatrician or you may see and consult an otorhinolaryngologist (ENT specialist).

Vertigo symptoms!

Vertigo is a sense of spontaneous movement, usually described as spinning.

Manifestations could be episodic lasting for a second, minute and a day whereas it could be persistent/constant usually associated with neurologic and metabolic causes.

If you have vertigo and similar complaints, have it checked with your primary care physician. Further you may book an appointment with an ENT specialist for further evaluation.

Health Facts for the Week!

Oral Cancers!

1. To***co use and habitual alcohol consumption synergistically increase the risk of developing oral carcinoma.
2. To***co and alcohol consumption are considered to be the most common preventable risk factors associated with the development of oral cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC).
3. Individuals who both smoke (2 packs per day) and drink (4 units of alcohol per day) are 35 times more likely to develop cancer.
4. The life expectancy was decreased by more than 10 years in current smokers versus those without a history of smoking.

Here's the good news.
> However, if individuals stopped smoking before the age of 40, the risk of death (associated with continued use) was decreased by 90%.
