What is the definition of consciousness ?
When you ask a consciousness the question..... What are you ??? How is he supposed to answer ?
What would be his answer ?

I am.......... Consciousness. This is the closest, most comprehensive definition ever !
Maybe the perfect one .
Pragmatically, the closest definition is "FEEL". Consciousness whether of the organisms with a few hundreds of neurons to those with thousands, millions or billions of neurons is generally a feel ! Consciousness or feel become higher order or higher level ( with increasing level of complexity ) as neurons become more numerous. But to ask what is feel is to come full circle as feel can be defined as consciousness. A corollary to this is feel or consciousness
is the product of precursors ....the neurones, specifically the electrical activities of these neurones !!!
Going back to the question, what are you ?
How would a consciousness from an organism with very few neurones answer ?? Understandably it cannot grasp the question so it cannot answer. A human being with 86 billions neurons in its brain needs to have special knowledge in neuroscience to be able to answer the question sensibly.

The Neuroscience of Speaking ( the oral language )
Speaking or talking is the most common human activity.
The physical part of speaking
The oral sounds of speech is the result of extremely complex muscular activities involving numerous bodily structures mainly centered in the larynx.
A word in speech (the oral language, a universe of words) is a distinct, specific sound that represents an information/idea which is encoded in a set or group or network of neurons, the so called memory. Here the memory is connected to the distinct sound called/termed word. The word is created by the movements of the vocalizing musculatures/structures. The well coordinated symphony of motions of vocalization is a memory akin to memories involved in walking or riding/driving a bike. Every spoken word (every word in human speech, the vocabulary) has a set of well coordinated muscular actions of the vocal musculatures/structures that create it. These muscular actions are implicit memories encoded in the brain's neural networks.
Speaking involves vocalizing a word or series of words. In speaking things happen so fast it is so beyond conprehension. Speaking is performed to answer, to ask etc. To ask.......the brain or thought must have consciousness of the condition or problem or circumstance/s that needs an answer. Formulating the speech to ask requires a multitude of speech memories. The human brain have super extraordinary power for speech, an ability of the brain completely unappreciated. How and why this so ??? Humans tend to idolize mathematical and scientific abilities. But speech is much, much more complex than mathematics. Far more so if the underlying neural processes are considered. Speech has far more neural complexity than the neural complexity in mathematical processing. Then why this speech ability remain unappreciated or not looked up to highly ? The reason of course is that almost all of the humans ( whether from the most remote hinterlands of the Amazonian forest or deepest mountains of Papua or the most cosmopolitan cities like New York or Paris ) have brains adequately neurally wired for speech/language. In great contrast only a few human brains are equipped with complex neuronal wirings for mathematics. A rare commodity always get a great value.
The neural part of speaking
The synthesis of ideas from memories or informations during speaking.it is one of the most amazing feature of speech. Every, each word or any element of speech represent an information or memory or idea (IMI) which in turn is encoded in a network of neurons and sentence construction needs combining these IMI based on rules which are also IMI that have networks of neurons but are not words. I call these IMI the supra IMI or nonword IMI. Another supra-amazing thing with speaking is the creation of ideas from the words and sentences which I call the synthesis of ideas from IMIs !!! Ex the sentence I never thought I can jump through the fire....
The neural events during speaking happen so fast (instantaneous). How can this be ?

Walking, a simple physical activity has neural correlates (neural events) far, far less complicated than those in talking. Physical actions/activities involve one set of neural activities while talking/speaking have two sets of neural activities that happen simultaneously.

Oral language have set rules. The sentence .... I am eating...have 3 words. Each have neural correlates, the neuronal network that code for it. I refers to me, my person. It is probably the most extensive, the most numerous, the largest and the most connected neuronal network in the brain. It is not a single huge network but a multitude of neuronal networks heavily interconnected to one another.

The neural network in thinking, logicizing and intelligence ( Neural Logic Network or Logic Circuitry of the Brain)
Sensory perception have a simple, well defined neural pathway. Sensory informations enter a sensory organ (eg eye, ear, somatic sensory endorgan, nose etc) then travel along a specific nerve to enter (via cranial or spinal route) the central nervous system and reach the appropriate destination(ex. cortical locus). There, the information eventually become consciounated. Sensory informations are carried by energies eg for vision, light energy is the information carrier. Light strikes a physical existence extracts physical informations then the information carrying light energy travels and get detected by an energy sensor (eyes).
In thinking and logicizing, information/s travels through a maze of multiple, complex and crisscrossing neural pathways and neural networks (the neural logic network) !!! These neural logic networks process the informations to produce new informations. Intelligence is the presence of these neural networks/pathways. The level of intelligence is determined by the number, efficiency and complexity of these neural networks/pathways. The pathways the informations take in the complex maze of the neural logic networks are unpredictable and may be not well defined. Informations can seek or attempt on different neural paths on a trial and error manner till it reach a logical end (the new information). This logical end (a neural network destination ) represent the answer or discovery. Its like water seeking paths to flow. Information can enter different neural pathways, different neural networks trying to find the logical end, the neural network
that codes for the answer. Some pathways lead to a dead end neural network and the process then go back to start.... to try other pathways to seek for the logical end. The search for the logical end neural network can go on even at sleep or during periods the brain /mind is busy on a different, unrelated thoughts. This process is a subconscious mental activity. Subconscious neural activity persists. Many scientific ideas are discovered in this manner.
In ordinary life situations many logical ends are reached through this mental/neural process. a very crucial human survival mechanism.

Tracing these thinking, logicizing neural networks in the brain is presently, technologically impossible.
The logical end neural network which code for the answer must be connected to a eureka neural network , that gives the feeling of correctness.

Forms in Consciousness
In the physical existence or world, form refer to the physical attributes like shape and size which are in reference to space. Shape and size refer to a certain limited space in the continuous unlimited or boundless or infinite space or physical space field. In the consciousness or psychic ? existence, form is a different thing. Examples of forms of consciousness are visual, auditory, somatosensory, intellectual, emotions etc. Consciousnesses lie in the feel field. There is no shape and size ! Instead it is character.
Consciousness (C energy) is created in the cortical brain. The C energy precursor is the neural electrical signal/information. A specific neuronal population in the appropriate cortical locus converts the neural electric signals to a C energy form which is the specific consciousness.

The cortex is inordinately huge, expansive and complex compared to the thalamus, how come ? how ?

The massive and incomprehensible neural complexity of the visual cortex vs the simplicity of the optic nerve tells a lot about what the visual cortex does. Compare the simplicity of the neural informations, the neural electric energy flowing in the optic nerve vs the incomprehensibly complex neural electric activities and the visual consciousness (visual C energy) in the visual cortex.....this shows the megametamorphosis occurring in the visual cortex !
I look at a plant, or a tree.... simple elements from the ground (water, nutrients) with some energy from the sun later become physical forms..... the flowers and fruits. Its a miracle in biology, of life. Similarly the brain uses simple electric energies, combines them to create psychic form, the consciousness.

Thalamus and Consciousness
The gateway into the cortex is the thalamus. Sensory informations can reach the cortex mainly through the thalamus. Intercortical connections pass through the thalamus. But the thalamus is not a mere passageway for neural informations, it is a major processsing center, it dictates consciousness and it chooses which information/s (that get into the cortex) become consciounated. Informations that get into the cortex nagkakaroon ng form, the psychic form or consciousness form. It is the cortex that gives form to the informations coming from the thalamus. Example- visual neural informations prethalamic are mere neural electrical signals but when they reach the visual cortex they become psychic visual consciousness. Same with other sensory faculties (auditory, somatosensory, olfactory, balance etc). Its as if a tasteless or unpalatable raw meat or food is cooked in ingredients to result to a tasteful, delicious food. The cortex cooks and provides the ingredients. This why the cortex is inordinately huge and expansive compared to the thalamus.
Consciousness is continuous sensory neural activity. It comes from a continuous input, flow of sensory information.

When the brain gets conscious
When we wake up, everything is organized, in proper order. First among all things, we feel ourselves, we know ourselves. When we feel ourselves we open up to our personal universe of knowledge/informations but these knowledge donot come to active consciousness. Its like an open door, that leads to a universe of personal knowledge.We know our place, the bed we lie on, the room we're in , the things in our room. We know our temporal location (our location in time).

Physical neuroscience - deals with the brain, neurons etc. Consciousness can access the physical brain.
Psychic neuroscience - deals with the consciousness created by the brain, neurons.
Consciousness can access itself (self introspection).

Logic and Feel

Logic neural networks consists of myriads of groups of neurones. Information/s enter a group/s of neurons which then process (logic process) the received informations. After the processing, output informations come out. The new, output information/s get connected to another group of neurons, the Feel neurons. This pool of Feel neurons create and give the special feel, the feel of correctness, the feel of being right (the logical Feel). Every logic process neural circuit/network is connected to a Feel neural network that creates the logical feel. Thus unlike in machine supercomputers or AI, human logic process is inherently connected to the logical Feel neural network. Feel is consciousness. The logical Feel is one of the numerous forms of Feel, of consciousness. Feel is consciousness and vice versa. I believe AI or supercomputers cannot produce consciousness.
