And sometimes, it is much easier to succumb, be engulfed, and be battered by the storm than to look for our way out.

Su***de has been a long-standing public health issue that affects a lot of individuals. The World Health Organization (2024) reported a figure of around 700,000 cases of death by su***de occurred globally, which is approximately one death per 40 seconds.

In the Philippines, the Philippine Statistics Authority recorded over 4,400 intentional self-harm cases. In the year 2021-2022, the Department of Education documented a staggering 404 deaths by su***de among students.

Su***de has no single cause; rather, it is the amalgamation of numerous factors such as genetics, environment, and life circumstances.

Hence, in celebration of Su***de Prevention Month, we, the π™ΏπšŠπšπšŠπš’πš˜πš—; Movement, are in solidarity with every person and organization in spreading the right information about su***de, hope, and a hand for people to hold onto.

Never be afraid to reach out and talk. There are always people who are willing to listen to your story.

Your story matters. As you are.

Su***de is a heartbreaking act where someone intentionally harms themselves with the purpose of ending their life (CDC, 2024). The factors that lead to su***de are deeply complex and varied, shaped by an interaction of cultural, biological, psychological, and environmental influences that affect individuals at different stages of their lives (WHO, 2024).

The World Health Organization highlights a sobering reality: over 720,000 people around the world lose their lives to su***de each year, making it the third leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29, and with countless attempts (WHO, 2024).

In the Philippines, the situation is equally alarming, with su***de cases surging by 57.6% to 4,420 in 2020, a spike worsened by the challenges of the recent health pandemic (Balita, 2024).

Closer to home in Davao City, the Philippine Mental Health Association's Davao Chapter reported 53 cases in 2022, involving individuals ranging from 13 to 71 years old. Within just the first four months of 2023, 26 more cases were documented in this same age group, underscoring the ongoing mental health crisis (Espinosa, 2023).
