Every day, we rely on electricity to power our homes and offices. However, it is important to always be safe around electric appliances, equipment and power lines. Electricity is an essential and dependable resource but
we must all be aware of the serious and sometimes deadly consequences of using electricity unsafely.

By taking simple precautions, everyone can avoid electrically related fires, fatalities, injuries and property loss.

INDOORS:

Don’t overload electrical outlets.
Check electric cords for fraying or cracking. Replace cords that may be damaged.
Remember extension cords are intended to be temporary; they are not intended as permanent household wiring.
Don’t run cords under carpets or rugs and don’t tack or nail cords to walls or floors.
Keep electric appliances and tools away from water. Never reach for or unplug an appliance that has fallen into water; instead, turn the power off at the breaker before you unplug the appliance or remove it from the water.
Never put anything other than an electrical plug in an outlet. Use outlet covers or caps to protect children.
Keep your home and office electrical system in good repair. Contact a licensed electrical contractor if you experience any problems.

"Don't talk to strangers" has been the rule for many parents for generations. But sometimes it's a good idea for kids to talk to strangers. Who else will they turn to if they're lost and need help?

So, instead of making a rule, it's better to teach kids when it's OK to talk to strangers and when it's not. When your kids are out with you, it's fine to let them say hello and talk to new people. You are watching the situation and will protect them.

But if your child is alone and approached by a stranger, that's a different story. Tell your kids that if a stranger ever approaches and offers a ride or treats (like candy or toys) or asks for help with a task (like helping find a lost dog), they should step away, yell "No!" and leave the area right away. Your child should tell you or another trusted adult (like a teacher or childcare worker) what happened. The same goes if anyone — whether a stranger, family member, or friend — asks your child to keep a secret, tries to touch your child's private area, or asks your child to touch theirs.

Most kids are likely to be wary of strangers who are mean-looking or appear scary in some way. But most predators and abductors are regular-looking people, and many go out of their way to look friendly, safe, and appealing to children. So, instead of judging a person by appearance, teach kids to judge people by their actions.

It's also important to encourage kids to trust their own instincts. Teach them that if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or if they feel like something's just not right — even if they can't explain why — they need to walk away immediately.

So, what happens if your kids are alone and need to approach a stranger for help? First, they should try to find a person in uniform, like a police officer, security guard, or store employee. If there are no uniformed people, look for grandparents, women, and people with children who may be able to help. And again, remind them about instincts: If they don't have a good feeling about a certain person, they should approach someone else.

It's not possible to protect kids from strangers at all times. But it is possible to teach them about appropriate behaviors and what to do if somebody crosses the line. Keeping these tips in mind can help your kids stay safe while they're out and about.

It’s important to know as many electrical safety tips as possible. At school or other public places, you may notice electrical safety rules posted to prevent accidents from occurring. However, at home, it’s important to be aware and educate household members about electrical safety at home. While electricity is critical if we want to control the climate of our home or eat warm meals, it can be dangerous too. Electrical hazards can lead to home structure fires that can be devastating. Being able to identify potential hazards early on can prevent fires and keep everyone safe. In some cases, you may be posed with an electrical threat and it’s important to know how to react.

Although electricity is a basic need in our modern life, we must take safety precautions. The precautions we take against electricity can be referred to as electrical safety. Injuries that result from electricity can be fatal. Electricity can cause electrical shocks, electrical burns, and electrocution. Even if you don’t work professionally in a hazardous job that causes you to be exposed to electricity regularly, you should still practice electrical safety. At home, electric cords, overloaded circuits, water near electrical items, unused appliances that are plugged in, and a long list of other things can pose an electrical threat. In addition, there are many outdoor activities, such as flying kites near power lines, using electric appliances on wet surfaces, or just being near electrical equipment can pose an electrical threat.

Unsafe behaviors are more difficult to recognize and correct because they involved human factors. An unsafe behavior is any act or behavior that deviates from a generally recognized safe way or specified method of doing a job and which increases the probabilities of an accident.

Many are quick to blame unsafe behaviors on untrained or inexperienced workers. However, behavior isn’t directly related to skill level. In fact, the more skilled and seasoned an employee is, the more likely they are to engage in unsafe behavior because the behavior has been reinforced over time. If an employee has never been hurt while doing their job in an unsafe manner, it’s more difficult to convince them that the consequences are real.

Unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviors can exist either independently or concurrently. An incident can be the result of one or the other, or it can be the result of a combination of the two. Unsafe behaviors, more than unsafe conditions, are responsible for the majority of occupational injuries and incidents. Approximately 80-95% of all incidents are triggered by unsafe behavior. Unsafe behaviors also make unsafe conditions worse. When snow and ice storms create unsafe driving conditions, these unsafe conditions are even more dangerous when drivers go too fast or do not leave safe stopping distances. The risk of an incident increases when multiple factors are at play, rather than the unsafe condition alone. When an unsafe condition exists, we must further alter our behavior to negotiate it safely.

Maintaining a safe home and yard is important for the safety of your family, but also for the safety of your friends, guests, workers, and other people who may be accessing your property. Keeping your home free of dangers and equipped with home safety products can prevent mundane accidents such as falls and can protect you from emergencies like fires.

Taking steps to eliminate hazards can reduce your liability as a homeowner. Ensuring that your property is safe can take work, and maintaining your safe home and yard can be a lifestyle change. Protecting yourself from liability is well worth the work, though, and protecting your family from injury is priceless. Consistently check for and eliminate hazards in your home, perform (or hire professionals to perform) maintenance around your home, and protect against seasonal hazards to keep your property safe. Practice some good habits around your home to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Fire has many properties which make it beneficial to life. The ability to manage fire has been credited as one of the key points in the success of humans as a species. When we think of uses for fire, our first thoughts are for cooking and heating, but it has also played an important role in managing the natural landscape, propulsion and signalling.

The issue is that when fire isn’t carefully managed it is extremely hazardous. In the right conditions, flames and smoke can spread rapidly and cause considerable damage to people, property and the environment. Fires can be accidentally or intentionally started, but once alight the heat and poor visibility can make it difficult for people to escape or fight the flames.

The best way to minimise the risk of fire is to take the threat seriously and put in place fire prevention measures. Understanding potential triggers, installing fire alarms, smoke alarms and other devices along with making and sharing fire safety plans are all ways to reduce the risk.

Fires can start in a wide variety of ways, but there are a number of issues that commonly result in unmanaged fires. These issues include discarded lit ci******es, faulty electrics, chip pans, overloaded plug sockets and incorrect storage of combustible materials. The first step for any fire safety work is to identify the risks within your domestic or commercial environment and putting in place measures to lower the risk.

Even in a low risk environment, there is still a chance that a fire may start. The second concern is therefore to install early warning systems that will improve the chances of escape. Fire alarms and smoke alarms are examples of such devices. They will make a loud noise to warn people that fire or smoke has been detected. Once alerted, people can take action to get out of the building as safely as possible. Fire alarms can also be connected to local fire stations, so they are also alerted to the incident and can be on the scene more quickly.

Being alerted to a fire is one thing, but then everyone in the building needs to be clear on how to respond to that alarm. In commercial buildings, illuminated fire exit signs help to guide people to safety, but they need to practice fire safety procedure regularly, to ensure it is automatic if and when an incident should arise.

Whether you are at home or in the workplace, it is important that you understand the fire safety plan and you share this information with others. Making people aware of the potential triggers, how to activate fire alarms and the routes out of a building are all critical to minimising the risks. As are details such as the importance of not returning into the building until you have been informed it is safe to do so.

Fire safety in the home is of the greatest importance and there are a range of measures you can take to keep your family and home safe from fire. Here are some of the most important ones.

Understanding what to do in the event of a fire is the cornerstone of fire safety. develop a fire evacuation plan for your home and ensure all family members understand what to do. As a fire can commence just about anywhere in the home, multiple exit strategies should be included. If you have deadlocks and security doors, you’ll want to make certain the keys are obtainable so that exit is not delayed or prevented. Explain to children the need to stay low to reduce smoke inhalation as they move towards an exit, and that they should never ever delay leaving to retrieve a pet, toy or other items. You’ll find plenty of detailed information online about creating a fire evacuation plan for your home.

Every home ought to have a fire extinguisher, but your extinguisher might be of little use if only one person knows how to use it. Train every family member to use the fire extinguisher, and make certain they understand what to do for different types of fires.

A working smoke alarm is designed to alert you to a fire, which makes them a priority when it comes to fire safety precautions . They are very sensitive – for good reason – and can be activated by even a small amount of smoke such as that generated by burning toast. The primary function of the smoke alarm is to alert you to the presence of a fire if you are asleep. Fire can spread easily and a swift response is essential. Once you have smoke alarms installed, be sure to change the batteries when required and test the alarms periodically.

These safety measures might seem simple, but a astonishing number of house fires are started because these precautions haven’t been taken:

• Heaters should be at least three feet away from curtains, bedding and clothing.

• Matches and lighters should always be stored above the reach of children.

• Candles should not be positioned near curtains or other flammable items.

• Food cooking on the stove top should not be left unattended. If you are multi-tasking while cooking and are working in another area of the home, set an alarm to remind you to check the pot!

• Don’t overload power points with multiple double adaptors and power boards. If you have a great deal of appliances in one room, have an electrician install some additional power points.
